CONNECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Application filed March 18, 1908. Serial No. 421,847.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE A. HAM- MOND, a citizen of the United States, and resident of andwhose post-office address is 170 Bloomfield avenue, in the city and county of Passaic, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin .Connectors, of which the following is a specification.
.My invention particularly relates to improvements in terminal connectors adapted for use on batteries and similar articles or and easily removable connection is desirable.
In carrying my invention into practice, I
dispose of the ordinary binding nuts now commonly employed on dry cells for retaining the conductor in place around and in contact with the screw post, as these nuts are liable to and often do work loose, especially when subjected to the vibratory move ment caused by the running ofan automobile, etc, resulting in a loose connection and an interruption in the ignition circuit.
My terminal connector is used in the stead or place of the binding nuts heretofore used, and affords a tight connection that cannot be vibrated loose.
Referring to the accompanying in which like reference numerals indicate like parts throughoutFigure' I represents a complete connector comprising two terminals of my improved construction linked together with a suitable conducting wire. Fig. II is a View of a portion of a dry battery showing one of equipped with my improved terminal. Fig.
isa view illustrating the stamping or blank from which my improved terminal is formed.
In the figures, 1 represents a conducting wire having. a terminal connector at either end. The terminal is made of suitable springy material, and is struck up or formed from the shape of blank illustrated by Fig.
drawing its binding posts- III, and, when formed, comprises a bow or U-shaped shank portion 2, perforated projecting or gripping ortions --3- (four in number), and the s eeve portion 4.-. The perforated projecting portions at both sides of the shank portion -2 are adapted to alinc with one another so as to permit the screw or binding post to pass through them, so that the e ges of the perforated projections -3 will seat or catch in the screw threads of the Fig. II. A pair of l'ongitudinally spaced openings 7 are punched in the blank toward that end thereof at which the sleeve 4 is formed, and the conductor 1 is secured to the terminal by passing the end 6 of the wire thereof first through the opening 7 farthest from the sleeve and then back through the other opening 7, the extremity of the wire and the end portion of the conductor being clamped within the sleeve.
Having thus described my I claim as new herein, and by Letters Patent is g The herein described terminal connector for connecting an electrical conductor to a post, the said terminal connector bein formed from a single blank of sheet materia and comprising a centralshank extending longitudinally of the conductor and provided at one extremity with a sleeve for engaging the conductor, the two end portions of the shank being each provided with a pair of oppositely disposed perforated gripping members which extend in parallel planes from the edges of the shank, the perforations of one set of gripping members being adapted to register with the perforations of the opposite set of gripping members to receive the 30st and the resiliency of the shank then holcing the said gripping members in engagement with the 0st.
