To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GRANT I-IENERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys, the object in view being to provide a toy catapult designed for shooting marbles, balls and the like and embodying a construction which insures simplicity, economy and reliability of operation while providing an attractive amusement device for children.

IVith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement hereinafter .fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :-F igure 1 is a side elevation of the improved toy. Fig. is an inside elevation of one of the sections or halves of the toy. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the toy. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.

The body or frame of the toy is made up of two similar and approximately equal sections 1 and 2 of the same general conguration, the sections being provided with marginal inturned flanges 3 so that when said sections are 'secured together by passing screws, rivets or their equivalent through the sections as shown at 4, an inclosed space is formed in which the operative parts of the mechanism are housed.

The shape of the frame or body pieces is such as to provide a hand-grip 5 which may be roughened or chased as shown at 6, a projecting half barrel or gutter 7 for holding a ball or marble and directing the same when projected from the toy, and an over-hanging arm 8 located above the barrel and adapted for the support of the marble or ball retainer. The ball retainer consists of a piece of wire bent into inverted U-shape as shown in Figs. 8 and 4 and extending over the top of the arm 8 to which it is secured by means of a spring 9 the tendency of which is to hold the retainer downward but allow the same to yield upward. 19 designates the trigger which may be formed of a piece of wire, one end thereof being provided with an eye which surrounds a pivot in the lower portion of the handle while the opposite hooked end 21 of the trigger is adapted to ride over a knob or projection 22 on one of the sections so as to impart a lateral movement thereto and to the spring 14 which will push said spring from behind the shoulder 18 allowing said spring to snap forward and strike against the ball or marble `shown at 23 which is thereby projected a distance commensurate with the power of the spring 14.

I claim l. A toy of the class described comprising a hollow sectional frame, a half barrel or gutter projecting therefrom, a projectile retainer embodying inwardly converging spring arms which act to clasp the projectile at opposite sides of its vertical axis and hold the same against the half barrel, a spring for throwing the projectile, means for holding the spring set, and a trigger for releasing the spring.
