ADOLPHE GAUDRQN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
Letters Pctmt N 93,873, dated August 17, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT 4:EN SAWINGMACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
thawingtgs,4 and to the letters of reference markedthereon, making a part of' this speciiication. i
The nature of my invention is the combination of the machinery for feeding and raising thesaws', when the logz, is cut, and the arrangement of the deg gra-spint,y the log on the horse.
io enable others skilled in the art to make. and use my invention, l will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
My machine is constructed oi' a wood frame, A, to
which the machinery is fixed, and arranged to` work with 'two sani-ns, one on each side. l
A motive-wheel, B; is placed inside ofthe frame A, mounted on a shai't, l, projecting from both sides of the frame, to which is adapted aerank, C, to he'worked by hand. l
'.ihere are a ily-wheel, l, and pulley, E, mounted on the sha-it ii', with a crank, l?, at each end, giving Inot 'in the saws H amil-l', by means of the. connectlct I transmits motion from the wheel B to F, which, by the connecting-rods G G', the oscillating; motion to the saws H H', n ich are attaclnid to the frame J J', mounted on a pioieoting centre-pin, K. (See section, Figures 5, i; f"
.ihe pin'I" works in a frame, L, slidin between two siid'is, M M', inside ot' which is a ratchet-br.
y '.iwo pawis, N N, work on a pin iixd t ,the piece i), screwed through the middle ot'- the centre-piti ',lv". 'The piece tl) can be raised or lowered, to `regulate motion ot" the pawls with `the ratchetsaecording to the oscillation of the saws. v J* u n., plat-e7 P, with an obronr,r slot, slides up ,and down in. two pins, Q Q'. l. le plate i?, by going up, throws out the pawls' N er the zts with the two pins R It'. By coming der. i, the -jaw-i." )i E become free, and the spring S' I will describe the use of the dog` a, Figures l, 2, intended to grasp the log on the horse.
By pulling the handle b, the teeth of the ratchet c catch the hook d, lFigures 2, Si.
As soon as ready to pnt on another log, by pressing with the foot on. the treadle c e', it pulls down the hook d, by the wire j, and the ratchet-bar is free.
The spring r/ brings back the arm of the dog; a.
A spring, 11,'keeps np the hook d.
N ow I will explain how to Work with my machine.
lt can be worked with the two saws at once, or one after the other, without lremoving any piece.
The space between the saws is sixteen inches, d1- viding the log of cord-wood in three.
llt' only one out is required, the middleofthe log is pnt under one of the saws.
The first operation is to put the 10g on the horse; then, to pull the handle l) ot'y the dog a, enough to grasp the log firmly.
The second operation is, after taking hold of the hand-crank iJ with one hand, to hegiii motion of the saws, to push the upper arm of the bell-crank U, in order to drop the saw on the log as soon as the plate l is brought down, by means oi' the inclined bar '.l.
'lhe notch Y catches the pin4 Q, tig. 5, and the papis N N fall in the ratchets.
The machine being put in 1notion,=theoscillation of the saws transmits mot-ion to the centre-pin K, and the pawls will catch the teeth of the ratchets, one after the other, bringing down the sa\vs, unt-il it has passed the loo".
Then the lower part of the plate P, which is rounded, strikes against the dog Z, lig. 2, which throws the notch Y ont of the pin Q, by pushing it to the opposite side.
At the same moment the spring X pulls the upper arm of the bell-crank U, which raises the pla-te P, by means of the bar T. In the mean time the pins It It throw the pawls N N out of the ratchet-teeth, and the spring X, by pulling, raises the saws freely to their upper position, ready to begin again.
Ill/'hat I claim as my invention, and desire-to--secure by Letters Patent, is*- 1. The apparatus by which the saws are raised when the cutting is done, constructed and operatinr as herein set forth.
2. The conneeting-rod G, in combination with the saws H H', their frames J J', the different pieces on 'the plates P and L, connecting-rod l the bell-crank U, the bars V, with their springs X, all constructed substantially as herein set forth.
3. The dog a, in combination with the pieces c d and ef h g, constructed in the manner herein shown and described.
