MARY A. MCCLELLAND, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. April l, 1909.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909. serial No. 487,201.
To all whom it may concern:v
Be it known that I, MARY A. MOCLEL- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in attachments for chairs and more especially to tablets for supporting writing pads, writing paper, drawing paper, books and other articles thereon.
The object of the invention is to provide a chair with a tablet which is capable of be ing adjusted in such a manner that it will assume a convenient position when in use and furnish a support for a writing` pad or other article, and which can be dropped down into a vertical position out of the way when not in use and occupy a minimum amount of space.
It also has for its object to provide a device of the character described which is simple, inexpensive and durable in construction and which can be easily and quickly adjusted to the desired position.
Chairs having this attachment are particularly designed for use in colleges, schools, libraries, lunch rooms, and private residences, but are capable of being used in numerous other places.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1, is a side view of a chair showing the tablet in the position it assumes when in use in full lines and in the position it assumes when not in use in dotted lines. Fig. 2, a front view. Fig. 3, a top plan view. Fig. 1, a cross-section on the line X-X of Fig. 8, on an enlarged scale. 'Fig 5, a detail view of the tablet.
In the drawings in which like numerals of reference denote like parts throughout the several views, 1 represents an arm chair which may be of any desired style and constructed of any suitable material, 2 corner posts the upper portions of which serve as supports for the arms 3 and 4 and the lower portions forming legs 5, said chair being provided with a back 6 and a seat 7 having a laterally extending stop S. The tablet 9 comprises two members 10 and 11 hinged together at 12 in any suitable manner and pivoted to the side 13 of the arm 3 of the chair by means of a headed bolt 14 passing through a hole 15 in the member 10 and being provided with a nut 16. The tablet 4 rest on the upper surface 17 of the said arm.
When the tablet is not in use the members 1'() andy 11 will be in the same vertical plane and the edge of the member 10 will rest against the stop 8 on the seat 7.
Although I have shown the stop attached to the seat it may be attached to the arm or round of the chair.
Although the tablet is particularly adaptJ ed for use on the arm or arms of a chair it is obvious that it could be attached to any other suitable support and if it is desired to incline the tablet the arm or arms of the chair may be inclined.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the specic details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to the various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
What I claim is 1. In an attachment for chairs, an arm, a tablet divided into two members which are hinged together, one of said members piv oted to the arm and abutting against it, thus preventing lateral movement of the tablet, and the other member being supported on and in contact with said arm, when in use, the last named member designed to be turned on its hinge until it is in line with the pivoted member and both of said members swung down into the same vertical plane, when not in use, substantially as described.
2. In an attachment for chairs, an arm, a tablet comprising two members hinged together longitudinally, one member being in a vertical plane and pivoted to and abutting` against the sido of the arm and the In testimony whereof I have signed myl other member being in a horizontal plane, name in the presence of two subscribing l0 when in ise, angl when not in ue boh o witnesses. saic mem ers a uttino' against t e si e o 5 the arm by means of which they are held in MARY A' MGCLELLAND' the same 4Vertical plane and a stop for ar- /Vitnesses: resting the rearward movement of said mem- 1WILLIAM J.
