State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements vin Cookingn Ranges, of which the following is a full,

clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to a cooking range and it has for its object to so construct a cooking range having a surmounting back plate as to provide for an unobstructed top surface of the range top adjacent to the back plate and between the shelf or warming closet supports in order that the range top may be more readily and elliciently polished at its surface immediately in front of 2o the point at which the back plate is located.

Ranges as heretofore made and in which provision is made for the attachment of a back plate above the range top have com'- monly had cast upon the range tops posts or upright lugs for the attachment of the back plate, and when such posts or lugs are present upon the range top it is difficult to polish the rear portion of the range top in preparing it for the market, while by my improvementl these posts or lugs are entirely dispensed with and the entire top surface that appears in front of the back plate when the range is completed may be` readily polished, with the result of greatly enhancing the appear? ance of the top of the range.

Figure I is a rear elevation of a range containing my improvement, the range being shown partly in full lines and partly in dotted lines. Fig. II yis an enlarged rear elevation partly broken out of the top of my range and the lower portion'of the back plate surmounting said top. Fig. III is in part an enlarged elevation and in part a vertical o section of the rear portion of the range top and the lower portion of the backplate surmounting said top.

This back plate is provided at its lower edge with a curled bead 7 that occupies the recessed seat i in the back flange of the range top and is held in position in said seat and against its front wall by 'the' upright lugs 5. When this curled bead is introduced into the position just stated, it becomes tightly wedged therein due to its being of curled form and having a natural resiliency therein due to the curling of the metal of which the back plate is produced. The back plate may be sustained in an upright position by any suitable means and it is preferably attached to brackets, one of .which is shown at 8 Fig. III, and, which also serve as supports for a shelf or. warming closet located above the rangejtop in a manner common to cooking ranges.

I claim l. A cooking range, comprising a flanged top having a recessed seat at the top of its rear flange, lugs projecting upwardly from the rear flange at vthe back of said recessed seat, and a back plate having its lower edge located in said recessed seat in front of said lugs. t

A cooking range, comprising a flanged top having a recessed seat at the top of its rear flange, lugs projecting upwardly from the rear flange at the back of said recessed seat,7and a back plate having its lower edge located in said recessed seat in front of said lugs; said back plate being provided at its ylower edge with a bead.

3. A cookingI range, comprising a flanged top having a recessed sea-t at the top of its rear flange, lugs projecting upwardly from the rear flange at the back of said recessed seat, and a back plate having its lower edge located in said recessed seat in front of said lugs; said back plate being provided at its lower edge with a curled bead.
