Description

G. I W. SMITH.
DART.
APPLICATION FILED D110. 15; 1908.
Patented Sept 7, 1909.
Witnesses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. SMITH, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
DART.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Darts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a dart designed primarily to be projected from a blow-tube, but which can also be employed in connection with spring or air rifles, or string bows.
The invention relates particularly to the manner of securing upon the dart a metal point.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dart. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the dart. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail View, a rubber sleeve being removed, illustrating the manner of securing the dart point to the shank or stick. Fig. i is a plan view of a sheet of fabric with the head of the point shown centrally thereon.
In constructing the dart I employ a cylindrical stick 1 which forms a shank, and which may be of any length, and to one end of this shank is secured a metal point 2 which I have shown as made from an ordinary tack provided with the usual head 3. To secure this point to the shank I provide a small piece of fabric 4 which is filled or coated upon both-faces with an adhesive ma- Specification of Letters Patent.

terial and the point is passed centrally through said fabric up to the head. The
head of the point is then brought into en-- gagement with an end of the shank and the fabric folded over and upon the end portion of said shank, adhering thereto. A rubber sleeve 5 is then slipped over the point and over the fabric, said sleeve covering the head of the point and the fabric, and adhering to said fabric. The point is thereby firmly secured to the shank without making it necessary to bore out, recess or split the shank.
hat I claim is 1. The combination with a shank, of a point having a head, said head being brought into engagement with an end of the shank,
and a flexible material infolding said head' GEORGE W. SMITH.
