MAINSPRING-WIN DER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORVILLE S. Evans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmington, in the county of San Juan and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IS Iainspring-IVinders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in main spring winder, and refers particularly to a device for winding the main spring used in clocks.
The main object of my invention is the provision of a device of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction, by means of which the main spring may be quickly wound and clamped, or secured in position to be placed in the clock, and thus insure the production of a useful, practical and desirable device.
To attain the desired object, my invention consists of a clock main spring winder, embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
In order that the detailed construction and operation of my device may be readily understood, and its numerous advantages be fully appreciated, I have illustrated a device constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1, represents a perspective view of the clock main spring winder. Fig. 2, represents a horizontal sectional view and, Fig. 3, represents a vertical sectional view to illustrate certain details of the device.
My clock main spring winder embodies the supporting plate or bracket A, provided with a shoulder portion B, and with openings C, to receive screws or fastenings for securing the supporting plate or bracket to a stationary object, such as a jewelers work table or bench. The supporting plate is provided with the bifurcation or cut-out portion D, forming a pair of arms E, and E, which are provided at their extremities with openings or passages, F. The lower arm, E is somewhat broader than the upper arm E, and is provided with an offset kerf or recess G. Mounted in the openings F, is the shaft Specification of Letters Patent.

H, provided with a crank J, and upon said shaft is provided a finger K, adapted to enter an opening in one end of the main spring, which main spring is wound upon the shaft and is taken from the pintle L, secured in the lug M, formed on one side of the supporting plate or bracket.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings the operation of my main spring winder will be readily understood and I simply say that the spring to be wound is placed upon the pintle and the free end thereof is connected to the shaft and when the shaft is turned the main spring is wound tight upon said shaft and when it has been completely wound the clamp is placed around the spring and to remove the spring from the shaft it is simply necessary to disengage the finger from the opening in the end of the main spring, then pull the shaft down and the spring may then be moved away from the bracket ready for insertion in the clock.
It is evident that I provide a device for winding the main spring of clocks which can be produced at a very low price and which will fill a long felt want in a practical and eflicient manner.
I claim:
1. The main spring winder consisting of a bracket or support having a pair of arms, a pintle carried by said support for receiving the spring to be wound, a shaft provided with a crank mounted in the arms and means for connecting the shaft with the spring and for permitting the withdrawal of the shaft from the spring.
2. A main spring winder, consisting of a bracket or support, provided with a pair of arms having vertical bearings, one of said bearings having a slot extending to one side thereof, and a shaft mounted in said bearing and having the finger toengage an opening in one end of the main spring.
