Attorney 1 no. ceases.
s OFFFJE W M M. SMITH; 0F TURTLE CREEK, PENNSYLVANIA. I sway-near;
Persians Aug. 1h,- 11509;
To all whoinit may concern; I Be it known that: 1:, WILLIAM M. SMITH,
a citizenv of the United States, residin" at Turtle treek, inthe county of Allegheny and State bf lennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in StavBolts, fica-tiion. y
p This invention relates to that class of stay of which the following is a specibolts w'hichare used for the purpose of staying sheets offlocornotive and other steam boilers and" the object thereof, is to, provide a stay boltwithineans at each end thereof whereby a steam tigl'it' connection is bad between the boiler sheetand the ends of the bolt and furthermore whereby the necessary degree of flexibility for the boltis obtained to overcome breakage of-the bolt due to expansion of the boiler sheets when building up the tire or to high pressure steam.
Further objects of the invention are to. a provide a flexible stay bolt which shall be simple in its construction strong, durable,
efficient in its use, readilyiset up and inexpensive to manufacture:
With the foregoing and other object sin view the-'inventionconsists of the novel con-- struct-ion, combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter more specifically describedand illustrated in the accompanying draw ings wherein is shown the preferred embodimentof the invention, but it'is to be understood that changes variations and-modifications can be resort ed to which come within the scope of the'claiins hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a-side e levatiom-partly in section, of a flexible stay bolt in accordance with this invention shdwing the adaptation thereof in connection with the inner and outer sheets of.
a boiler. Fig. 2 is a view-similarto Fig. 1 of a modification, and, Fig. 3 is aside elevation' of, the shank employed in connection with the form shown' in Fig; 2, the shank being-broken intermediate its ends. p
In connection with a stay bolt in accordance with this invention either or bothyends thereof when a boiler sheet'or sheets expand, move laterally,lthat is to say the direction of movement of. the bolt" at {one or both of its ends is vertical Qr-Latfrightr-angIeS with respect to the expansive movement of the sheet or sheets.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 ofthe drawa plication filed February 20, 1909. seen-no. 479,132.
ii 1gs,'-3denotes the'outer sheet of the boiler and 4=the1inn'er sheet, each of said sheets is formed with openings 5, the openingsof one sheet being arranged opposite the openings of the other sheet and the-walls of theo'penings are formed withscrew-threadsi.
Referring to Fi 1 of the drawings the shank 6f the bolt is'indicated by 'therefer ence character 6"and at one end is formed with an integraF-head 7 and at its' pther end with a removable head 8'. That end of the thank 6 whi h-is provided'with'the removable head 8 is' threaded as at 9, the said I threads engaging with the interior threads of the removable head 8, the latter' beingin the form of'a' cap. The fixed head 7 as well as the removable head 8 has formed on itsf inner terminus an annular flange 10 having the periphery thereof rounded: The flange '10 is flaredand projects to such an extent as to be positioneai in a plane inwardly-o'fthe planetin which the inner face 11 of either of the "heads extends. -The Width of the flange- 10 in cross section is less than the width of the inner face 11' of' either of the heads. The inner face 11 of either of-itheheads of the bolt is'rounded and constitutes a seat for the-terminus 'of a flange to be hereinafter referred'to. Secured to the boiler sheet 3 is a tapering plug 12, which extends through the opening 5 and engages with the threads of the wall of said opening. For such puradapted to receive t e immovable head 8:
of the-"bolt: Secured to the sheet .i'is a.
tapering-plug 18 'for-'th e= reception of the thepliig 1,8 is constructed" in the sarne mannet" as the inner' endof'the plug :12, the same reference "characters being applied thereto. The plug 18 is secured to thesh'eet 4 in, the same manner as the plug 12 and is also closed by a cap 19.
Bv the foregoing construction and ar .rangement of; parts it is evident that; if
either of theboiler sheets expand, the bolt will shift laterally wing=,to the width of the flanges with respect'to'the seats 16 and the width of the flange with respect to,
the width of the'inner face 11, under such conditions the necessary flexibility is obtained for the bolt to prevent breakage thereof when the sheets expand,
In the construction shown in Figs. Qand 3, the shank of the bolt is indicated by the reference character 20 and each end is screwthreaded. as at2l" to receive a removable .head 22. The construction of each of the head'si22 .is similarto that of the head 8 and like reference characters are applied thereto.-. Thenlorhrof bolt shown in' F1gs.-&
. and 3 is nioun 'ted'in the same manner as thebolt'shown in Fig. 1, likereference charac-..
ters beiitg applied;
' B providing .the removable head at one end or at both ends, it is evident that provision is' made whereby the length of that portion of the shank which is arranged within tliegboiler. can be increased ordiminished as'desird. "The removable head or heads. is or are squared at the outer end or ends so that therelhdvable head or heads can be adjusted'by hand or by a suitable tool.
.What I claim is: Y J I '1. A flexible staybolt comprising a shank having each end prfovided with a head, each a hearing, combined with means for coupling the bolt to the boiler sheet, said means formed with. bearings associated with said flan' es. I -,f-
