CHARLES BILLBURG AND ST. LAWRENCE CHANDLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION SUIT-CASE AND VALISE.
Application filed November 9, 1908.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES BILLBUne and Sr. LAWRENCE CHANDLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Coolr, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Suit-Case and Valise, of which the following is a specification.
Cur invention relates to suitcases and valises, and more specifically to combinations thereof.
The object of our invention is to provide a combination of the character mentioned, the separate members of which, will be of such construction as to be adapted to be readily and easily locked together in such a manner as to facilitate ease in transporting the same by hand.
A further object of our invention is to provide a combination of the character mentioned, the members of which may be separated and used individually if desired, each of said members being of an outward appear ance substantially the same as that of an ordinary member of its respective class.
A still further object of our invention is to provide a combination of the character mentioned, each of the separate members of which, as well as the combination of the said members, will be of neat and finished appearance, and further, which will be strong and durable, simple of construction, hence of low cost to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, our invention consists generally in a suit-case and valise so constructed that the bottom edge portion of said valise may be readily and easily locked in a channel provided for the reception of the same in the front side of said suit-case.
Our invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Our invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of our device, the members thereof being shown assembled, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the suit-case, separately, Fig. 3 is an enlarged central longitudinal section of said suit-case, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the valise embodied in our invention,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Serial No. 461,71
separately, and Fig. 5 is a detail central longitudinal section of the lower portion of said valise.
Referring now to the drawings, our invention consist-s in a valise 1 and a suit-case 2, the same being of any ordinary or preferred form, hence we do not wish to be limited to the specific forms shown in the drawings. The valise 1 is provided at its lower edge with a depending peripheral flange 3 of any suitable width. In order to strengthen or reinforce said lower edge of said flange, we provide the same with a preferably metal band 4, preferably resting between the walls 5, of leather or other material used, of the valise. Said band l is of any suitable width and thickness, the same extending entirely around the lower edge of said valise. Each of the end portions 6 of the flange 3, is provided preferably midway between the er:- tremities thereof, with a preferably circular perforation 7, for a purpose hereinafter stated. k
The front side wall 8, preferably, of the suit-case 2, is provided with a channel or groove 9, said channel being of such a width, depth and shape, as to be adapted to snugly receive the depending flange 3 of the valise 1. In order to facilitate easily and securely locking said valise to said suit-case, we provide the side wall 8 of said suit-case adjacent to the groove 9 therein, ith locks 10 of any ordinary or preferred form, 11 indicating the key therefor. in said wall 8 that the bolts 12 thereof are adapted when said valise flange 3 is in posi tion in said channel, to enter the perforations 7 provided in said flange, the end portions of said bolts 12 being adapted when in looking position to rest in slots 13 provided in the inner wall of said channel 9, for the reception of the same. In order to facilitate readily forming the side wall 8 with the channel 9 and at the same time to reinforce said wall, we form the same preferably of two sections, an inner section l l and an outer section 15 secured together in any suitable manner. The outer section 15 is formed of a central portion 16 and a peripheral portion 17, between the outer edge of the former and the inner edge of the latter of which is formed the channel 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, said portion 16 being preferably secured to the section 14 by means of rivets 18. The outer, preferably leather, cover 19, of the suit-case forms, as clearly shown in Fig.
Said locks are so positioned 3, a lining for said channel 9 thereby finishing off thesame.
By the provision of a suit-case and valise, as described, it is obviousthat each of said receptacles in itself if used separately, as Well as the combination of the two,cis of a neat and finished appearance, and further, by the provision of such a combination, the two receptacles may be carried with one hand leaving the other free for other uses, hence, resulting in obvious advantages especially for traveling people.
if hile we have shown what we deem to be the preferable form of our device, we do not Wish to be limited thereto, as there might be many changes made, as for instance, in the positioning of the locks used and'in the con struction of the reinforced side of the suitcase, Without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having described our invention What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A combination of the class described, cons sting of a suit-case and a vahse, one of the outer surfaces of said suit-case being provided With a channel adapted to receive the lower edge portion of said valise, and means for locking said lower edge portion ofsaid valisein said channel, substantially asidescribed.
2 A combination of the class described, consisting of a suit-case and a valise,.-said valise'being provided at its lower edgetwith a perforated depending flange, one ofthe outer surfaces of said suit-case beingpro- Vided With a channel adapted to receive said depending flange of said valise, and'loclring means provided in said suit-case. adapted to engage the perforations in said depending flange of said valise, substantially as described.
3. A combination of the class-described, consisting of a suit-case and a .valise, said valise being provided at its lower edge with a reinforced perforated depending flange, the
front side of said suit case being provided with a channel adapted. to. snuglyreceive the depending flange of said valise, and locking umeans provided in-said suit-case adjacent to said channel adapted to engage said perforationsin said depending flange of. said valise,
substantially as described.
4. A 'CODlblIlttlOZl of the class descr1bed,
consisting of a suit-case and a valise, said said depending flange of said valise, substantially as described.
5. A combination of the class described, consisting of a suit-case and a 'valise, said valise being provided with a perforated depending flange, one of the side Walls of said suit-case being formed of sections, the outer one of said sections being formed of a central and a peripheral portion so secured to the outer surface of the inner one of said sections that a narrow space adapted toreceivesaid depending valise flange remains betweentthe outer circumference of said. central portion and the inner edgeof said peripheral portion, and locks secured in :said Wall of said suitcase, the'bolts; of which are adapted to enter the perforations of said depending valise flange, substantially. as described.
In testimony'whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
JANET ,E. HOGAN, .HELEN FMLILLIS.
