MILK-BOTTLE HOLDER.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Bottle Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to automatically locking devices which are mounted or placed on the outside of doors and which provide receptacles for receiving milk bottles or other similar articles and so locking them that they may only be removed when the door is opened.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements herein fully illustrated and to be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be fully under stood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view showing my device attached to a door. Fig. 2 is a sec tional elevation of my invention applied to a door.

In the drawings 1 represents a door hinged at 2 to the jamb 3. The receptacle 4 of boxlike construction may be secured to the door by means of screw eyes 5 or in any other suitable way. When screw eyes are used plugs 6 may be inserted in the eye of the screw eyes so as to securely fix the receptacle onto the door. Of course it is possible to secure the receptacle by additional screw eyes or by other means to either the panels or other part-s of the door 1.

The receptacle 4 may be made of wood or any other suitable material but preferably of metal. IVhen made of metal the end pieces 9 the sides 7 and the bottom 8 may be made of a single piece of metal formed into the desired shape. WVhen made of wood or other material, these parts may be separately made and suitably secured together. If desired of course the end pieces 9, the bottom 8 and the side pieces 7 may be made of separate pieces of metal and securely united with each other. The cover 10 is provided with a slot 11 on its inner side formed in any suitable way. In the drawings I have shown this slot formed by means of a metal plate 12 secured at the end of the cover and underneath Specification of Letters Patent.

the cover and having an effect as clearly shown in Fig. 2. A pin 13 passes through the sides 7 of the receptacle and is adapted to be engaged between the plate 12 and the cover 10. This cover 10 can be thrown up wardly into the position indicated in Fig. 2 in dotted lines and when in this position milk bottles 14 or any other articles may be placed within the receptacle 4.

The receptacle 4 is so placed on the door 1 that the cover 10, one end 15 of which extends beyond one end 9 of the receptacle, will engage at that end with the door jamb 3. The overhanging end 15 of the cover 10 is slotted to receive a bolt 16 which is normally pressed outwardly by the spring 17. The door jamb 3 is recessed at 18 so to receive the end of the bolt 16. The distance between the receptacle 4 and the door jamb 3 is short so that when the cover 10 is thrown down to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 the bolt 16 will engage with the recess 18 and the door jamb 3 and thus securely lock the cover down upon the top of the receptacle 4.

When the cover is locked in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 it will be evident that the receptacle 4 will be completely inclosed so that milk bottles 14 or other similar articles cannot be taken therefrom until the door 1 is thrown open and thus the bolt 16 is drawn away from engagement in the recess 18 in the door jamb 3. Thus the contents of the receptacle 4 will be securely protected against any one pillcring them and they will thus be saved from molestation by any unauthorized pcrsons. Obviously the rcccptacle 4 may be made of any desired lengtl'i provided it is not longer than the width of the door 1 and .it may be made of any desired width provided its width is not greater than the width of the door jamb 3. Thus I provide by my invention a receptacle capable of securely holding safe from molestation a large quantity of articles.

It will be evident from the foregoing description that my device is very simple and cheap in construction, not easily put out of order and that it at the same time securely and effectively accomplishes the objects desired. hlanilestly some departures from the exact details of my invention, as herein shown and described, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein shown and described.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

1. The combination with a door and its jamb of a milk bottle holder comprising a receptacle capable of being secured to said door and having all but its top permanently closed, a pivoted cover provided with an overhanging end extending toward said j amb when said cover is closed, a bolt carried by the overhanging end of said cover, said bolt being normally spring-pressed outwardly and means in said jamb for engaging said bolt when said cover is closed.

2. The combination with a door and its jamb of a milk bottle holder comprising a hollow receptacle capable of being secured to said door, a pivoted cover provided with a beveled overhanging end extending toward said amb when said cover is closed, a bolt carried by the overhanging end of said cover, said bolt being normally spring-pressed outwardly and means in said jamb for engaging said bolt when said cover is closed.

3. The combination with a door and its jamb of a milk bottle holder comprising a receptacle, means for securing said receptacle to said door, a movable cover slotted on its under side, a pin secured in the top of said receptacle and adapted to pass through the slot of said cover, spring-pressed locking means carried on the end of said cover and means in said jamb for engaging said locking means when said cover is closed whereby said cover is capable of rotatory as well as vertical movements and when it is closed and the said door is closed, said receptacle is securely locked.

4. The combination with a door and its jamb of a mill; bottle holder comprising a hollow receptacle, means for securing said receptacle to said door, a movable cover slotted on its under side and provided with an overhanging end extending toward said jamb when said cover is closed, a pin secured in the top of said receptacle and adapted to pass through the slot of said cover, a bolt carried by the overhanging end of said cover, said bolt being normally spring pressed outwardly and means secured to said amb for engaging said bolt when said cover is closed.
