Description

.Letters Patent No. 92,759, dated July 20, 1869.
IMPROVED ASHO'UZIILDER-SIIIJ'IPORT The Schedule referred to in these Letters .Patent and making part of the same.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. B. SMITH, of the cityv and county of Milwaukee, aud State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoulder and Abdominal Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, ,in which- Figure 1 shows the support upon the back, the prongs hooked over the shoulder;
Figure 2'shows it with the prongs B passed under the arms and hooked back, th'e points seen just over the shoulder;
Figure 3, a View of the support alone; and
Figure 4, a front View ofthe supporter, showing the abdominal support.
Similar letters of reference in each of the figures indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a support for all persons that are in the habit of leaning forward, and the support may be worn entirely on the back, as shown in iig. l, or passed under the arms and up over the shoulders, as shown in fig. 2, with a front ahdomi Anal suppolt, E..
In either case it vwill be a great comfort and support, and prevent those cramped stomachs so common. A is the main portion of the support, joined to gether, with a wide base, with holes for straps to buckle .round the body.
B, the liookingprongs, to hook over the shoulders Q, strap,
D, strap, with holes in it to pass through a buckle. E, an abdominal support, which will hold`up the lower part of the abdomen and not hurt the back,\the
shoulder-support holding up the abdomen, and yielding by its spring.
This support is made of steel, so far as the parts A and B are concerned, or of any other suitable material, and straps O audD are made of lea-ther, on any other exible material, and E, the abdominal supporter, is made of leather, or any`other suitable material, slipped onl one of the straps C or D, so that when the straps C and Dare fastened, it will press against the abdomen and hold it up, and `the spring of the support A vand B will keep the straps from hurting the back.
Operation..
Put the brace on, either by passing :the` prongs B under the arms, or -by hooking them over the shoulders and bringing the straps round the body, which will bring the base A in, and throw out or back the prongs B, which will straighten up the back, and throw the shoulders back and open the lungs, and will also support the abdomen.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A shoulder-support, made substantially as dcscribed.
2. A shoulder-support, with the abdominal supporter E, substantially as and for the purpose dcscribed.
v J. B. SMITH.
