WARREN M. CONRAD, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
INFANTS DIAPER-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I/VARREN M. CONRAD, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Infants Diaper- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to enable infants diapers to be fastened securely and quickly, and as quickly unfastened, without the use of pins, and without the possibility of injury to the infants body by the fastening means.
The invention consists in a diaper fastener characterized as hereinafter set forth.
The accompanying drawing represents a side view of a diaper fastener embodying my invention.
My improved pinless diaper fastener is preferably made of a single piece of sheet metal, and composed of three bars 12, disposed to form an approximately triangular frame. The outer edges 14 of said bars are curved inwardly, and the corner portions formed by the meeting of the bars preferably present rounded edges 15. The inwardly curved edges 14 are adapted to conform to a portion of the abdomen and portions of the inner sides of the legs of an infant, so that when applied to the infants body in the position. required to hold the three ends or corners of a diaper folded, according to custom, into a triangular pad, the fastener will occupy the proper place for the secure engagement of the three corner portions of the pad without exerting injurious pressure through the diaper on the skin adjacent to the edges of the frame.
The opening formed by the inner edges of the frame bars is also substantially triangular, the said inner edges being preferably parallel with the outer edges, and so arranged that they form three tapering throats 16 forming parts of the frame opening. The edges 17, 17 of each throat constitute a pair of opposed diaper-gripping jaws, converging from the center of the frame outwardly, their outer end portions being preferably subst antially parallel with and in close proximity to each other at the outer end of the throat.
A diaper which has been folded on a line extended between two diagonally opposite corners, to form a triangular pad, may be secured to an infants body by first wedging one of the three corner portions into one of the throats 16. The folded diaper may then Specification of Letters Patent.

be laid upon the proper portion of the back of the infants body, the portion engaged by the fastener being brought over one of the hips until the fastener occupies a suitable position relatively to the abdomen and the inner sides of the legs. The other two corner portions of the folded diaper are then successively wedged into the other two throats 16, one corner portion being brought over the other hip, and the other between the legs. The corner portions of the diaper are drawn outwardly through the frame while they are being engaged with the jaws so that the body portion of the diaper may be drawn as closely against the infants body as may be desired. The free ends of said corner portions project from the outer side of the frame, and may be pushed simultaneously toward the center of the frame to disengage the diaper from the fastener.
It will be seen that the throats 16 are parts or branches of a large opening formed in the piece 12, and entirely surrounded thereby, so that diaper corners may be quickly and conveniently secured by inserting them in the enlarged central portion of the opening, the size of which is such that this operation may be quickly performed, and then moving said corners outwardly from the central portion of the opening into said throats until they are firmly grasped by the jaws. A reversal of the described steps releases the diaper from the fastener.
I claim:
An infants diaper fastener composed of a relatively thin, approximately triangular frame, having inwardly curved outer edges, adapted to conform without injury to portions of an infants body as specified, the frame entirely surrounding an approxi mately triangular opening, whose edges form three pairs of diaper-gripping jaws separated by tapering throats, the closed ends of which are adjacent to the corner portions of the frame, said throats being parts of the opening, so that diaper corners inserted in the enlarged central portion of the opening may be moved outwardly from said central portion into engagement with the jaws.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
