Description

J. W. WILKINSON.
POCKET CLOSURE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.29,190B.
Patented June 29, 1909.
C lNVENTOR jMM/4bm50n4 AT'T'ORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOIIN W. WILKINSON, OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF FORTY-NINE ONE-IIFNDRFDTHS TO LOUIS MAYER, OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS.
POCKET-CLOSURE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. WVILKINSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Beaumont, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in pocket closures.
The object of the invention is to provide a pocket closure embodying two flaps secured to the opposite walls of the pocket and secured together to prevent access to the pocket without first detaching the lower ends of the a s.
Finally the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable and efficient, and simple and comparatively inexpensive to produce, also one in which the several parts will not be liable to get out of working order.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a pocket showing my invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is an inner elevation of one side of the pocket, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the opposite side.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the fabric of the garment or other article to which the pocket is attached, or in other words forms one wall of the pocket.
2 designates the fabric or material which is applied to the part 1 to form the pocket and constitutes the other wall of the pocket.
The invention resides more particularly in the provision of flaps 3 and 4 having each a comparatively broad upper edge and tapered or contracted toward its lower end. The
upper edge of each flap has a length sufficient to substantially extend the inner length of the pocket.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 29, 1908.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Serial No. 50,859.
The flap 3 is secured at its upper end to the wall 2 and the flaps 4 to the wall 1 as shown in Fig. 1. These flaps are secured to the pocket by turning opposite hems 5 thereon and securing these bears to the walls of the pocket, thus leaving flap hanging smoothly in the pocket with plain opposed surfaces.
Near the lower ends of the flaps a resilient fastening or means of securing the ends to gether is provided. In carrying this out, a socket 6 is secured to the lower end of the flap 4 and a fastening head 7 adapted to enter the socket 6 is secured to the lower end of the flap 3 so that access to the pocket below the point where the head enters the socket is prevented. lVhen it is desired to gain access to the pocket, it is only necessary to use one hand in releasing the fastening and the l laps.
It is to be noted that the arrangement of the socket and head may be reversed and that other styles of fastenings may be substituted and also that the closure may be applied to hand bags, satehels and other devices as well as pockets.
\Vhat I claim, is:
In a pocket closure, two flaps, each secured at its upper end to one of the walls of the pocket, the flaps hanging free on opposite sides of the pocket and their free lower ends being unconnected, and a resilient fastening for temporarily securing the lower ends of the flaps together, one part of the fastening carried by one ilap and the other part of the fastening carried by the other llap, the laps adapted to be extended from the pocket and their ends entirely separated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN IV. I'VILKINSON.
\Vitnesses:
JACK A. SenLEY, \VM. A. OA'riIEY.
