COTVIBINED MATCH-BOX AND CIGAR-CLIPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1909.
Application filed January 15, 1909. Serial N 0. 472,483.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that i, Janus C. llARIIlSCX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of 'Wcakley and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful lmprm'ements in a Combined Matchl o. and Cigar-Clipper, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention relates to a combined. match box and cigar clipper, and the objectof the invention is to provide a device of this character provided with a suitable match chute and a cutting blade, the device being provided with an operating pin or key whereby a single match is ejected from the chute and the knife pressed forward to clip the end of a cigar Simultaneously with the ejection of the match.
With the above, and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro gresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical s ctional view upon the line 1-1 of Fig. i. Fig. 2 Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon the line 8-3 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. t is a horizontal sectional view upon the line l l of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the combined knife and ejector.
1n the drawing the numeral 1 designates a substantially rectangular box comprising what may be termed the base portion of the device. This box 1 has its sides, top and bottom closed and the under face of its top provided with spaced knife guides 2 which are adapted for the reception of a sliding knife 3. The top of the receptacle 1 is also provided with a cylindrical perforation 42 positioned directly in the path of the knife -3 and adapted to serve as a means whereby the tip of a cigar may be inserted within the receptacle to be clipped by the knife in a manner hereinai'iter to be described. The receptacle 1 is also provided with a sliding drawer 5 and one of the sides of the receptaclc is cut away a suitable distance to allow for the ready insertion of thcsaid drawer. This drawer 5 is provided with a suitable handle or button 6 and is adapted to be positioned directly below the opening t so as to serve as a receptacle for the clipped ends of the cigar.
Secured upon the top of the receptacle 1 is a front elevation of the device.
and adjacent one side thereof is a vertically arranged match chute 7. This chute 7 is constructed preferably of some suitable metal and is substantially rectangular in cross section and of a-width equaling that of the ordinary match. The receptacle 7 may be provided with an open mouth, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing so that the matches may be fed directly through this month into the chute 7, and the front of the chute is provided with a transparent member preferably constructed of glass as indicated by the numeral 8 so that the number of matches within the receptacle may be readily perceptible. The sides of the chute 7 are bent upon themselves as indicated by the nun' eral'S) so as to extend a slight distance upon the front of the receptacle and to provide guide ways for the transparent member 8. This member 8 is readily removable by simply sliding the same upon the guide ways 9 so that when it is desired to refill the chute or receptacle 7 the device may be tilted rearwardly and the receptacle tilled, thus obviating the necessity of dropping a single match at a time within the receptacle as previously described.
The knife member 3 has its cutting edge arranged at an angle so as to provide a shearing cutting motion when the blade is brought into contact with the cigar tip, thus providing for an even severing of the tip, and obviating ragged edges upon the ends of the cigars as well as greatly prolonging the life of the knife. The knife 3 is pro vided with a substantially right angular oftset portion 10 which is provided with a vertically arranged offset portion 11 adapted to extend through a longitudinal slot 12 provided by the top of the receptacle 1 and extending from this offset portion 11 is an ejector arm 13 adapted to be positioned normally adjacent one end of the match within the receptacle 7 and o force the same partially out of the receptacle through a suitable opening provided in the side of the receptacle opposite to that occupied by the ejector 13.
Slidably mounted within a suitable opening provided by the top of the receptacle 1 and directly to the rear of the knife member 3 is the knife and ejector operating member lat. This member it comprises a pintle provided with a head 15 and is normally retained in raised position through the medium of a helical spring 16 which is positioned beneath the base of the pintlc 1i and the bottom of the receptacle 1.. The pintle 14: 1s mounted withm suitable bearings 17 and has its upward movement hmited through the medium of suitable pins or stops 18. The member 14: is also provided with an angular substantially V-shaped contacting member 19, and this member 19 is adapted, when downward pressure is exerted upon the member 14, to contact with the rear of the knife 3 to force the same toward the opening t of the casing 1 and at the same time move the ejector arm 13 so as to force a match from the receptacle, thus simultaneously performing the double function of severing the top from the cigar and ejecting a match.
In order to return the knife and ejector member to its normal position the arm 10 is provided with a suitable contraction spring 20 which has its opposite end secured to one of the walls of the receptacle 1 and which serves as a means for readily returning the knife and ejector into proper position after the expansion spring 16 has exerted upward pressure upon the member 11 to return the said member to its normal position.
From the above description, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawing it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and comparatively cheap device for the purpose set forth, one which simultaneously severs the end of a cigar and delivers the match, one in which the matches may be readily placed within the chute and one which provides a removable drawer for the reception of the severed tips of the cigars so that the same cannot contact with any of the working parts of the device.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
The combination with a receptacle, a knife member slidably mounted within the receptacle, said receptacle being provided. with a cylindrical opening within the path of the knife, an offset member upon the knife, said receptacle being provided with an elongated opening adapted for the reception of the offset member of the knife, an ejector member integrally formed upon the offset member of the knife, a match chute upon the receptacle having its sides provided at their lower extremities with openings, one of said openings being adapted for the reception of the ejector member, means for simultaneously sliding the knife and the ejector, and means for automatically returning the knife and the ejector to their normal position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES C. HARRISON.
