IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, H. A. GNOVER, of North Oohocton, in the'county of Steuben, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and usetul Improvement in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of my improved fence, and l Figure 2, a cross-section.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

My invention consists in the special construction and arrangement, as hereinafter set forth.

In the drawingsv A A indicate the posts, and B B, the rails.

The posts are set in the ground in the usual way.

On one side ot' them are situated blocks a. a, at regular distances apart, the spaces between being ot' such extent as to just admit the coupled ends b b ot the rails of znljoiningsections. The ends of the rails are coupled by notching them in dovetail-form, and then iitting them together between the blocks, as shown in iig. l. y

On the outside of the rails and blocks is located a hatten or cleat, G, which is clamped in place by loops cc, of wire, which encircle the blocks, and pass around the post, and are tightened by keys el l driven down therein.

This construction is very cheap. The blocks a a can lbe cut from the end of a board, and serve as stops to fill the space and retain the rails against vertical action, and keep them properly apart.

The loops c e, which pass over them, retain them in placeand, in connection with the wedges, serve to tighten the hatten against both the rails and the blocks7 to hold them all together.

rlhis construction makes the fence portable, as the parts can all be lbuilt up or taken down at pleasure.

I am aware .that many portable fences are. n ow known, but none constructed by building up the blocks between the dovetailed rails, and holding all together by the hatten and loops. v

Instead of blocksl a, any equivalent may be used.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The arrangement, with the posts A and rails B, oi the intermediate blocks a a, battens O, loops c c, and keys (l (Z, the whole operating as herein set forth.
