W. SHANNON.
BED. APPLIOATION I'ILED APE.27, 1997,
Patented June 8, 1909;
rsrinrr crunch WOODFORD SHANNON, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Application filed'April 27, 190?. Serial No. 370,583;
To all whom it may concern:
it known that I, Woonrono Srmssou, a cit zen of the United States, and resident of 1 Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to beds and more particularly to the manner of connecting bed bottoms to beds.
Owing ossibly for by lenicrcasons and to the fact t lat wooden be shave been made of various kinds of wood, beds and bed bottoms have been manufactured and sold independently. However since the advent oft-he metsllic beds most manufacturers have adopted standard side bars connecting the head and the foot of the bed, thus making it possible to manufacture the bed bottom and the side i frame to a s ring frame support lugs to fit withinthc sockets 3.
Other an further objects will appcsr in the following descri tion and will be more particularly pointe out in the appended claims.
In the drswingsFigure 1 is a perspective View of a bed employing my bed bottom, the spring-frame not being connected to the spring frame support. Fig. 2 is s longitudinal section of the spring frame support with the s rin frame in osition thcrcon. Fig. 3 is 8,( etsifof the clip for connecting the spring frame to the bed bottom support. Fig. 4 is a side view-of the clip.
Referring more particularly to the draw nigs 1 indicates the ioot oi the bed and 2' the head, each provided with one rucmbcr of a number of iestcning s 3 which may be of any suitable form, that shown being in the form of wedge shaped sockets. v I
The side bars 4 which form the side bars of the bed bottom and the side bars of the bed have suitable fastening members 5 at their ends, in the form of inverted wedge shaped The side bars are of any suitable shape, such for instance as the usual angle iron.
Rigidly connecting the side bars is a number of transverse bars 5, which are preferably in the form of strips of metal. The sidc bars 4 with these transverse bars form aspring bed support which is adapted for direct attachment to the foot and the head of, the standard beds and form a 'sum'iorting connection between tho scid parts.
The springs may be conncctcd directly to the transverse bars or they may be formed.
into a spring frame for convenicncc in ship ping. in the latter instance ihotop of the spring frame may be of an suitable form while the bottom should be formed of longitudinal wiresfi which arc conncctcd to the transverse bars .3 in any suitable manner, and transverse wires 7, the springs 8 being connected to the wircs (3 and 7 at tho points where said wirc' intersects each other.
As a means for fastening the spring frame to the spring frame support, I. provide a clip which is fori'ncd of a strip of sheet u'ictal. This clip is bent intermcdiatc its ends so as to form. two arms 9 which project u )wsrdly from the lower edge of a transverse bar, and
are positioned on opposite sides of and in contact with said bar. The free ends of the arms of the clip are twisted 90? at 'H) and arc then bent about a lon itudinal wire 0. This form of clip is especial y advantageous when there are no recesses in the transverse bars 5 or in the longitudinal wircs 6 to prevent the s ring franic slipping on. its support, as :1. meta strip clip has greater bearing on the longitudinal wircs.
It is apparent that the ring frame supportmay be manufactureo and sold scparately from the foot and the head oi' thc bed.
Having tlrus described my invention what I claim and dcsirc' to secure by Letters Patcnt is: y 1
J. The combination with a spring frame support having transverse bars and a spring i'rmne having longitudinal wires, oi means for connecting the spring frame to the support cinbodyinga clip formcd from a flat strip of metal, having two arms connected together under a transverse bur, extending upwardly upon opposite sides of the bar and each having a wide liatfsce in contact with a. side face of the bar,' the ends of the arms 2. The combination with the bar of a tudinal wire of a spring frame; of a fiat spring framasupport and the wire of a spring metal clip encompassing said bar with a frame; of a clip for securing said bar and I broad flat face, said clip having projecting 15 wire together, said clip consisting of a flat ends twisted at right angles to said bar to stripof metal with a broad flat surface in I encircle said longitudinal wire. contact with the bar and encompassing said i -Theforcgoing specification signed at Louis bar, the ends of said strip extending out- '-ville, Kentucky, this 16th day of November, wardly from said bar and twisted at an'angle 1906. thereto to engage said wire -of the spring XVOODFORD SHANNON. frame. In presence of two witnesses 3. The combination with the transverse IDA M. RIEGER, bar of a spring frame support and the longi- PDA GOEBEL.
