To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LOUGHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabric-Roll- Edge Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to fabric roll edge protectors, and has for its object to provide a device of this character that is extremely simple in construction, consisting of few parts that can be easily and cheaply manufactured, and very quickly and readily applied to a roll of fabric and detached there from when occasion requires.

My invention consists of two cap members to be applied to the ends of a roll of material, each cap member having a central proj ecting port-ion and entering the hollow center of the roll, and a locking member or rod having one end bent into a rigid hook memher and the other end bent into a spring hook member to yieldingly, yet firmly hold the caps together and against the ends of the roll.

In the drawings :Figure l is a section of a roll of fabric showing my protector applied thereto, the position of the locking member before being sprung into place being shown in dotted lines. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the end caps, and Fig. 1 is a View of one of the caps showing means for springing the locking member in position.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is a roll of fabric or other material having a hollow portion 2, to the ends of which are applied the end caps 3 and 4. Each end cap is provided with a central projecting portion 5 fitting into the hollow center 2 of the roll and the flat body or flange portion 6 fitting against the ends of the fabric so as to completely cover and protect the same.

The end cap 3 has in its projecting portion a large perforation 7 and a small perforation 8, the large perforation being located near the periphery of the projecting portion and the small perforation being located near the center. The end cap l is provided with the single perforation 9 which is located near the periphery of its central projecting portion. These perforations in the caps are for the reception and passage therethrough of the locking member 10 which I employ to fasten the end caps together. This locking member is made of metallic rod or wire and is bent at one end into a rigid hook member 11, the bill 12 of which extends substantially parallel with the main portion of the rod.

At its other end the locking member or rod is bent slightly upon itself, as at 13, to form the spring hook member 14, this spring member 14. being disposed at an angle to the looking rod, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

The free end of the spring hook member is curved slightly outwardly, as at 15, so as to provide a broad contact surface for the spring hook member and to permit the end of the spring hook to slide freely over the surface of the end cap when the spring member is subjected to tension.

In using my invention, the locking rod is passed through the perforation 9 in the cap 4 and by means of the implement 16, shown in Fig. 4, the rigid hook member is drawn through the large perforation 7 in the cap 3 against the tension of the spring member 14, which is pressed outwardly so as to assume a position nearly at a right angle to the locking rod, as shown in full lines in Fig. l and the bill 12 of the hook member 11 is then sprung into the perforation 7 in the end cap 3, thereby securely fastening the caps together.

To remove the protector from the roll, when occasion requires, it is only necessary to insert the implement 16 in the large perforation 7 and withdraw the bill 12 of the hook-11 from the small perforation 8, when the spring member 14 will draw the rod through the perforation 7 and thereby release the end caps.

By having the perforation 9 in the end cap 4 located near the periphery of the project ing portion 5, the end of the spring member 14 engages the end cap 4t near the center thereof and since the perforation 7 in the end cap 3 is located near the center, the tension of the locking member is exerted substantially upon the center of the end caps so as to hold the flanges of the end caps in even and close contact with the ends of the fabric roll.

It will thus be seen that my device is extremely simple and eflicient and can be readily and quickly assembled and disassembled when occasion requires.

lVhat is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising end caps, a locking rod passing through the end caps, the locking rod being bent at one end to form a rigid member to engage one of the end caps and being bent at the other end slightly upon itself to form a spring arm-like member whose free end only bears against the other end cap.

2. A device of the class described comprising end caps having central projecting portions, the projecting portion of one cap having a large perforation near its periphery and a small perforation near the center and the projecting portion of the other cap having a perforation in. its periphery, a locking member provided at one end with a rigid hook member and at its other end with a spring hook member, the rigid hook member passing through the large perforation in the first mentioned cap and having its end seated in the small perforation in said end cap, and a spring hook member passing through the perforation in the other cap and having its end in sliding engagement with the said cap.

A device of the class described, comprising end caps and a locking rod passing through perforations in the caps, the lock ing rod being bent at one end into a rigid hook member to engage one of the end caps and at its other end being bent slightly upon itself to form the spring hook member, the end of which being curved slightly outwardly for sliding engagement with the end cap when the locking rod is sprung into position.

A device of the class described comprising end caps adapted to be applied to a roll of fabric, a locking rod passing through the end caps, one end of the rod being bent into a rigid hook to fixedly engage one of the end caps and the other end of the rod being bent into a spring hook whose end has a free and sliding engagement with the other end cap.

5. In a de *ice of the class described comprising end caps, a lock rod passing through the end caps, one end of the lock rod formed into a rigid hook member whose end is seated in a perforation in one of the end caps and the other end of the lock rod being formed into a spring member whose end bears with a free and yielding contact against the other end cap.
