Description
s. c. GAUNT. TYPE MOLD.
AYPLIOATION TILED D30. 2, 1907.
Patented May 18, 190.9.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY C. GAUNT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO BARNHART BROS. & SPINDLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
TYPE-MOLD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY C. GAUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Type-Molds, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to type mold for easting type, and especially to a form of mold for casting type for use for italic or other slanting letters.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive form of type mold especially for the purpose mentioned.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the type mold embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken centrally through said mold, and Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
The mold shown comprises upper and lower members A and B respectively. The upper member is conveniently composed of a top plate 1, carriage 2 secured to said top plate, a register 3 carrying a stool 4, a body 5, and a jet 6. The lower member is composed of a bottom plate 7, a carriage 2 a register 3, body 5 and a jet 6. The carriages 2 and 2 and the bodies 5 and 5 form the type cavity or mold proper 7, and the jets 6 and 6 form an inlet 8, Fig. 3, for the molten metal. A matrix 9 having a type form 10 cut in it is adapted for use in connection with the mold as described.
In practice the mold is closed as shown in the drawings, and the matrix 9 is in position against the face of the mold, and the molten metal is admitted through the jet 6 into the mold cavity 7 When the cavity is filled the molten metal is shut off and allowed to harden and thereby forming the type. The mold is then opened and the matrix withdrawn, permitting the type to be removed.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. December 2, 1907.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Serial No. 404,660.
It will be seen, especially by reference to Fig. 1 that the type cavity 7 is adapted to form a zigzag style of type having an ofiset portion. This type being more particulary described and claimed by the application filed by me of even date herewith. The zigzag character of the type is to accommodate italic or similar slanting letters. It will be seen that by having the type up side down and having the two zigzag portions thereof, one above the other, an irregular shape type can be cast without trouble or inconvenience.
The two parts of the mold can be separated from one another without interference with the operation of the mold or without mutilating the type.
It will be understood that changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is 1. A type mold comprising separable members forming a type cavity of zigzag shape, and appliances to confine the operative movement of said members transversely to the direction of the offset of said zigzag cavity.
2. A type mold comprising separable members forming a type cavity of zigzag shape having shoulders, and devices for limiting the operative movement of said mem bers toward and away from said shoulders.
3. A type mold comprising upper and lower members provided with carriages, bodies and registers, the carriages and bodies being adapted to form a type mold cavity having an offset portion, the movement of said members being toward and away from the faces of said offset portion.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 18th day of October A. D.,
SIDNEY C. GAUNT. Witnesses:
A. A. MoEwEN, JOHN H. PORTER.
