Description

thom %tam mund %mira CYRUS HA RIs'OF RIVER POINT, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent No. 92,189, dated July 6, 1869. i
IMPROVEMENT IN SKEWBRS POR SPEEDER-BOBBINS.
erence being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of' my improved skewer and section of the 'speeder-bobbin; 4 Figure 2 is an elevation of the. said skewer separately;
Figure-3 is' an elevation of 'the said bobbin separately; and I i Figure 4 is a plan of the bottom or lower end of said bobbin. Similar letters denote like parts in all the figures. My invention relates to the constructionpf the skewer or spindle, upon which the bobbin or .spool is held, and revolves within the ereel of the speeder, as the roving is unwound therefron -ad delivered to the spinning or twisting-apparatus of the machine; and
` My said invention consists in constructing the said skewer with a shoulder or support near its` top, or within the barrel of the spool or bobhin, which is also provided with a corresponding shoulder to fit and rest on the said shoulder of the sken er, for the purpose of cheapening the cost of the skewer, and to make it more durable and better adapted for any variatiou in the creels of diiferent machines, and for other purposes.
Heretofo're the skewer has been made with a. narrow or thin fiange at the bottom, of suflicient diameter to support the bobbin, the bottom of which rested upon this flange. This flange, as I have stated, was narrow or thin, necessarily so, to limit the space between the bottom 'of the bobbin and the step in the" v The Scleule refe''ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
' creel, to atford all possible space-for the admission of the full bobhin; and it not unfi'equently happens in handling the full bobbin with the skewer inserted therein, that in the haste of substituting full bobbins for empty ones, the bobbin and skewer are dropped on the floor, and the thin flange thereby broken olf, so tha-t the skewer is thereafter useless.
It is also the fact that in forming the skewer with such a fiange, a larger piece of Wood is required, or else an additional piece is glned upon the bot-tom of the skewer t o form such fiange, which piece becomes loose from contact with oil and the beat of the room in which the machines are operated, and in consequence the flange thus formed Cracks off and separates from the skewer which is obviousl r attended with considerable trouble and expense.
Now, the construction set forth as my invention, dispenses with all this objection, and is otherwise of more practicnl utility and value.
In the drzuvings, 2 represents my improved skewer, consisting of a plain cylindrical piece ot' wood, 1), necked down to a. tapering point, I, at thebottom, and with a shoulder, B, and a cylizdrical stem, E, and taper ing tip S, Upon this skewer the hobbin K fits and rests', as shown in iig. 1, ashoulder, t, within the barrel of the bobbin, resting on the shoulder B of the skewer.
Having described my inventioi,
What l claim, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, isi The skewer, constr cted as herein described and shown, and provided with a shoulder, B, near its top, to aii'ord a supportfor the bobbin or spool, for the purpose specified.
