GRAB FOR PUMP AND :DRILL RODS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentea'iwiay 11, 1909.
Application led November 14, 1908. Serial No. 462,718.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDDIE l). LAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amarillo, in the county of Potter and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful lm- A proveniente in Grabs for Pump and Drill Rods, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in grabbing devices for removing pump rods, drill rods and the like from wells.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which may be readily lowered into a well and manipulated to firmly grip a rod or the like of any diameter so that the latter may be lifted out of the well.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved rod grabbing device, the jaws being in their open position; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same showing the jaws in their closed or operative position; and Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
The invention comprises a frame or head 1 slidably mounted on a supporting and operating` rod 2 and adapted to be locked thereto by a suitable catch 3, said frame or head carrying rod gripping jaws 4 adapted to be controlled by said rod. Vhile the frame 1 may be of any suitable form and construction, it preferably comprises two side bars 5 united by upper cross bars 6, 7 and by an annular band or ring S, the latter being arranged adjacent to the lower ends of the side bars and encompassing the same. The rod 2 slides freely in centrally arranged openings in the cross bars 6, 7 and has its lower end connected by diverging links 9 to two wedge blocks 10 which serve to actuate the jaws 4. The wedges 10 are mounted for sliding movement vertically or longitudinally of the frame, one being arranged upon vthe inner face of each of the side bars and being confined between and guided by pairs of guide plates 11. These plates are secured to the side faces or edges of the bars 5 and have their inner ends formed with right angularly bent and inwardly projecting tongues 12 to slide 1n guide grooves 13 formed in the opposite faces of said wedges,
as more clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
The links 9 have their upper ends pivotally connected to the lower end of the rod 2 and their lower ends similarly connected to the small upper ends of said wedges so that when the rod 2 is moved upwardly in the frame 1 their opposing inclined faces 14 will actuate the jaws toward each other to grip the drill rod, pump rod or the like between them. Said jaws t are mounted for sliding movement in a horizontal plane or transversely 'of the frame 1 and while they may be of any suitable form and construction, they are here shown in the form of body blocks 15 provided upon their opposing faces witi curved or concaved gripping plates 16. The outer ends of the body blocks 15 are beveled lor inclined to slide upon the inclined faces 14 of the wedges and upon their side faces are formed enlargements 17 formed with sockets or openings to receive guide bars 18. The latter are arranged in pairs and have their outer ends secured to the side edges of the bars 5 so that their inner ends project inwardly and form guides on which the j aws slide toward and from each other. The catch or latch device 3 is in the form of a dog pivoted at its upper end at 19 upon the upper cross bar 6 and having its lower end beveled and adapted to engage a notch or seat 2.0 formed in the rod 2. f The operation of the invention is as follows: Before the device is lowered into the well from which a pump or drill rod or the like is to be removed, the frame 1 is elevated upon the rod 2 and locked in such position by engaging the catch or dog 3 with the notch or seat 20. When the frame is in this position the small ends of the wedges 10 will engage the jaws so that the latter will be spaced far enough apart to receive the drill or pump rod when the device is lowered into a well. As soon as the pump or drill rod is between the jaw faces or plates 16 a slight jerking movement given to the rod 2 will cause the frame 1 to move upwardly on the same a distance sufficient to disengage the dog 3 from the seat 20, whereupon, the frame 1 will move downwardly and at the same time the rod 2 may be drawn upwardly so that the wedges 10 will actuate the jaws inwardly to tightly grip the rod between them.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. A device of the character described comprising a rod, a head shiftable longitudinally thereon, gripping jaws carried by the head, one being shiftable transversely of the head and toward andr from the other, means for locking the head to said rod and a wedge actuated by said rod for operating said movable jaw.
2. A device of the character described comprising` a rod having a shoulder, a head shiftable longitudinally thereon, gripping jaws carried by the head, one being shiftable transversely of the head and toward and from the other, a locking dog upon the vhead to engage the shoulder on said rod, and 'means actuated by said rod for operating said movable jaw.
3. A 'device of the character described comprising a rod, a head shiftable longitudinally thereon, jaws transversely slidable on said head, longitudinally slidable wedges on said head for actuating said jaws, links connecting said wedges to said rod and means for locking said head to said rod.
4. A device of the character described comprising a rod having a seat, a frame slidable longitudinally on said rod, a pivoted locking dog on the frame to engage said seat in the rod, guides upon the frame, longitudinally movable wedges slidably iengaged with said guides, other guides transversely .disposed upon the frame, gripping jaws slidable upon the .last `mentioned guides and adapted to engage and to be actuated by said wedges, and links connecting said wedges to said rod.
In testimony whereof I hereunto .'aIiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
