To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, SETH WHEELER, a citi zen of the United States of America, and resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Package-l v iring Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to package wiring machines and particularly to machines for inserting wire fasteners into and through packages, such as packages of toilet paper or the like, and for bend ng over the projecting ends of the wire fastener.
To this end my invention consists in means for rotating a wire fastener, the end of which has been out obliquely or has been otherwise sharpened, and in simultaneously thrusting the same through the package.
My invention also consists in improved means for bending over the projecting ends of the wire fastener after it has been inserted into and through the package Prior to my invention it has been customary to make an opening through the package for the wire before inserting it. By giving the end of this fastener a cutting edge and rapidly revolving it, it makes its own opening, and the package is wired in the same time or less than that required by the old method to make the opening, and far more easily, as considerable power is required to puncture so large an openin the necessarily heavy stabber makes; wn e the rapidly revolving wire is passed through with a very slight expenditure of power.
M invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully set forth.
I will now proceed to describe a package Wiring machine embodying my invention in detail and will then point out the novel features in claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a package wiring machine embodying my invention; 2 represents a front view of the same. fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view of certain formers employed and their actuating mechanism. 5 is a detail view of one of the wire fasteners employed, in its preferred form.

as providedwith a suitable base 5, a pedestal 6 rising from said base, an intermediate supporting frame 7 and a top head 8. The top head 8 carries a vertical shaft 9, which is suitably ournaled in bearings in the said head 8. A pulley, or band wheel, 10 is secured to rotate with the shaft 9, but is arranged to have a relative movement longitudinally thereof, a shaft spline connection therewith, permitting such movement.

T he shift rod 11 is secure to the shaft 9 by means of a cross bar 12 which is rigidly secured to the top of the rod 11. The top end of the shaft 9 is mounted in the said cross bar, and is permitted to rotate freely therein, but, longitudinally, will partake of its movement.
Secured to the lower end of the shift rod 11 is a connecting rod 13. A treadle 14 is mounted in the iedestal 6 and a link 15 conn sets the movable end of the treadle with the connecting rod 13. A spring 16, secured at one end to the frame, is attached at the other end to the link 15 and tends normally to draw the vertical shaft, the shift rod and the treadle 1 1 upwardly. A drive shaft, having drive wheels 17 ,is mounted upon the pedestal of the machine and mounted upon the said shaft is a band wheel 18. A belt or band 19 passes around the band wheel 18, over idler pulleys 20 mounted upon studs secured to the head piece 8 and around the band wheel or pulley 10.
Power being applied to one of the wheels 17, the pulley 18 is caused to revolve, and motion will be transmitted to the band wheel 18. Consequently, motion will also be transmitted to the shaft 9. Upon depressing the treadle l t, the shaft 9 will be drawn downwardly, but its rotary motion will not be interfered with, because of the s line connection between it and the said pul ey. T he shaft will be brought downwardly against the resistance of the spring 16 and will be returned to its upper )osition as shown in the drawings in Fig. 1, when the pressure upon the treadle 141 is removed. 'fhe lower end of the shaft 9 is provided with a chuck 21 having a slot 22 which is adapted to receive the looped end of a wire.
23 designates a table or platform which is secured to the intermediate frame 7 of the machine by suitable clamping bolts. The
holes in the extension of the platform or tatends to force the levers, at all times, to the ble, through which these clamping bolts pass, are preferably slotted, as shown at 24 in Fig. 2. These slots are so arranged, in order that the platform or table 23 may be correctly adjusted as to height. An adjusting screw 25 is provided for the pur ose of supporting and adjusting the said tab e, the clamping bolts being loosened during the operation of the adjustment and again tightened to securely clamp the said table in position. The table 23 is provided with a suitable gage 26 secured thereto, the purpose of which is to correctly locate the package upon the table when presented for wiring.
The operation of such portions of the machine as have been so far described is as follows: A package is placed u Jon the table 23 and located by being broug t in contact at the left hand side with the gage 26 and in front of the frame of the machine, the wire fastener with one end cut off at an angle, or sharpened, and the other end formed into a loop is held in position opposite the point at which it is desired to insert the same in the package. This point will be in a line with the axis of the shaft 9. The shaft 9 will now be lowered and the loop of the wire engaged by the chuck 21, the Wire loop will then partake of the rotary motion of the shaft 9, and, upon the shaft 9 being further depressed, the Wire, by reason of its sharp point and its rapid rotation, will be driven with but very little pressure through the package. The shaft 9 may now be permitted to return to its normal position and the wire will remain in the package with the loop extending above the package, and the end below the same. A top plate 27 is provided, and is shown as secured to the frame of the machine. The said top plate has a cut away portion 28 in the center to permit the passage of the wire loop. The end of the package is passed under this plate when placed in position, as just de scribed.
I will now describe the means for turning the loop down upon the top of the ackage, and for bending upwardly the end of the wire which extends through the bottom of the ackage. Reference characters 29 and 30 'esignate, respectively, upper and lower formers, which are secured to, or made a part of, short shafts mounted in the frame of the machine. Secured to move with the upper former 29 is a lever 31, and. secured to move with the lower former 30 is a lever 32. 33 designates a shaft mounted in brackets secured to the side of the machine, and 34 is an actuating handle or lever which is fast to the said shaft. Levers 35 and 36 are loosely mounted udon the said shaft. The shaft 33 is provided with a pin or key 37 and the levers 35 and 36 have slotted keyways 38 and 39 in which the said key is arranged to play. A spring 40, secured at one end to the lever 35 and at the other end to the lever 38,
osition in which they are shown in Fig. 4. n such figure, the key 37 18 shown as engaging with the right hand end of the slot 39 in the lever 36, and with the left hand end of the slot 38 in the lever 35. A link 41 connects the free end of the lever 35 with the free end of the lever 32, and a link 42 connects the free end of the lever 36 with the free end of the lever 31. If, new, the lever be depressed, the key 37 engaging with the end of the slot 39 in the lever 36 w ill rotate the said lever, and through the link connection 42 and lever 31 will rotate the former 29. The effect of this will be to bend the projecting looped end of the wire over the top of the ackage. The lever 35, by reason of the s.ot 38, will have remained stationary during this operation. The lever 36 will have been rotated against the action of the spring 40, and when the handle 34 shall have been released, the lever 36 and parts secured thereto will return to their normal position in which they are shown in Fig. 4. Upon raising the handle or lever 34, the key 37 will pass freely along the slot 39, but will, by its engagement with the slot 38, rotate the lever 35. In so doing, the former 30 will be rotated and the lower extending end of the wire will be bent upwardly against the bottom of the package. The spring 40 will return these parts to their normal position in a similar manner as just described for the return of the former 29 and its actuating mechanism.
It is obvious that many modifications of the mechanism herein described might be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention 1 therefore do not desire to be limited to the precise details of construction as herein shown.
What I claim is:
1. In a package wiring machine the combination with a table or support for the package, of a head having a chuck for receiving and holding a wire fastener, means for rotating the same relatively to the package and simultaneously thrusting the said fastener through the package, and for withdrawing the said chuck from engagement with the wire fastener after it has been thrust through the package, upper and lower formers for bending over the upper and lower projecting portions of the wire fastener after the same has been inserted, and means for moving the said formers across the axial line of rotation of the said head after the chuck has been withdrawn from engagement with the said fastener.
2. In a package wiring machine, the combination with a suitable table or support for the package, of upper and lower formers, a single operating lever and connections therefrom to both formers to operate same.
3. In a package wiring machine the combination with a suitable table or support for the package, of upper and lower formers, a single actuating lever and connections therefrom to the formers to independently operate each of the said formers.
l. In a package Wiring machine the 60111- bination r-xith a table and support for the package, of upper and lower formers for bending over the projecting ends of a wire which has been inserted into the package, an actuating lever, actuating mechanism connected to the upper and loner formers and to the actuating lever, the said actuating i'iechanisrn being so connected with the actuating lever that the movement of the said lever in one direction will operate the upper former, and the movement of the said lever in the opposite direction will operate the lower former.
5. In a package wiring machine the combination with a table or support for the package, of means for inserting a wire into and through the package, upper and lower formers for the bending over of the projecting ends of such Wire after it has been inserted, actuating mechanism including a rotatable hub for each of said formers, an actuating lever having apart adapted to engage one of said hubs When moved in one direction and to engage the other of said. hubs when moved in the opposite direction, and a spring connected with both of said hubs, opposing movement thereof.
