UNITED STATES rel-ran WILLIAM E. ASHBY, OF GHARITON, IOWA.
TELEPHONE OUT-OUT AND LIGI-ITNING-ARRESTER.
Application filed February 18, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. ASHBY, a citizen or the United States, residing at Ghariton, in the county of Lucas and State of lowa, have invented a new and useful Telephone Cut-Out and Lightning-Arrester, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a telephone cut out and lightning arrester adapted to be advantageously combined with a metallic circuit or two line wires in place of one line wire in such a manner that a plurality of telephones can be connected with the same circuit of line wires.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and sub-combination ot' elements as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of my instrument and shows it connected with a metallic circuit or two line wires with which a plurality of like instruments may be combined to be operated successively one at a time. Fig. 2 is a bottom view that shows three combs and a plurality of screws that serve as means for establishing electric circuits between the two line wires, between a phone and the line wires and between the line wires and two ground wires at the pleasure of the operator. Fig. 3 is a side view of the instrui'nent and shows it applied as required for practical use.
The numeral 10 designates a porcelain base of common form. A pair of combs, 12, is fixed on top of the base by screws 13 and 1t and each comb has an integral double contact 15. To the underside of the base is fixed a comb 16 by screws 17 that are seated in the combs 12 on the top of the base 10 as required for establishing a circuit between two line wires 18 independently of a phone and the ground whenever desired.
To the center of the base 10 are fixed two elbow-shaped lever bearers 19 by screws 20 and a phone wire 21 is fixed to each lever bearer 19 and each screw 20 and the screws extend through combs 22 and the lever bearers, phone wires and the screws are thus electrically connected with each other. To

more securely fasten the combs 22 to the base 10 screws 23 are extended through the base and seated in the combs. A. second pair of combs are fixed on the base 10 by screws 25, in alinement with the fixed combs 12, and have integral double contacts 26 so that a circuit can be established between the line wires 18, the combs 12, the screws 17, the comb 1 the combs the phone wires 21, the screws 25, ground wires 27 fixed to the screws 25 and switch levers 28 pivoted to the lever bearers 19. To procure this result the long arms 01" the switch levers must be depressed as required to engage them with the contacts 21. An insulated block 29 is fixed between the long arms of the switch levers 28 and a rod 30 is fixed to the block and extended through a wall, as shown in Fig. 3, and as required for operating the switch levers.
Having thus set forth the purposes of my invention, its construction and manner of use, the practical operation and utility thereof will be obvious.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A telephone cut out and lightning arrester comprising an insulating base, two
pairs of combs fixed on the base and each comb having an integral double contact, two lever bearers fixed on top of the base between the said pairs 01 combs, switch levers pivoted to the lever bearers, an insulating block fixed to the end of the lever, a stem fixed to the block, line wires fixed to one pair of combs on top of the base, ground wires fixed to the other pair of combs on top of the base, a comb on the underside of the base connected to the pair of combs over it on top of the base, two combs on the underside of the base connected with the lever bearers on top of the base and phone wires connected with said two combs on the underside of the base and the lever bearers on top of the base, arranged and combined to operate as set forth.
