CLIFFORD V. BATES, OF BARTLESVILLE, OKLAHOMA.
WA'IGHO ASE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
Application filed October *7, 1907. Serial No. 396,247.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Cmrronn V. Barns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartlesville, county of l l ashington, Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful improvements in atches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to watches.
The object or" the present invention is the provision of a watch having novel detachable means whereby it can be readily fastt red through a buttonhole, such as the one on the lapel of a mans coat, with the watch proper covered and the watch dial exposed and used, if desired, with any ornanzcntal design or configuration as, for instance, an elks head, an emblem.
The invention resides in the combination with a watch having a projecting part on its use formed as a button, and bearing a watch dial, ot a detachable member pro vided with a bezel to engage the said part, one embodiment of the invention being setlorth fully hereinafter.
The novel features of the invention are recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is a front view showing a watch dial as it would face the observer when in position on a garment; Fig. 2, a rear view of the watch case; 3, a side view, showing certain parts, including a part of the head button in section; Fig. a, a view on line et-4i of Fig. 3; and Fig. enlarged detail views showing a lug and notch for holding the bezel againstrotation.
The watch 1 may contain works of any desired construction, being wound and set by the usual devices 2 and Unlike ordinary watches having an open face which is eX- posed by opening the lid, the watch has secured to one side of its case a member having a neck at and a round head constituting, in eltect, a button by which the watch may be buttoned through a buttonhole of the garment, as, for instance, the buttonhole in the lapel of a mans coat. Arbors of the watch pass loosely through the neck and head and are provided with the usual hands (3, while the face of the head has a watch dial 7 used in conjunction with the hands to indicate the time.
At 10 there is shown a bezel which is provided with a crystal 11 and has a lug 12 adapted to take into a notch 13 in the edge of the head 5 to prevent rotation of the bezel. As the present invention is very capable of use an emblem any desired den may be employed in connection with i c bezel 10, an elks l ead let being shown in the present 1115;?(1106 as formed integral with or connected to the bezel 10. Obviously other designs could be used. Pivotcd on a pin 15 secured to the back of the elk s head 14, or other projection or" the bezel 10, is a catch 16 which has an elf set finger 17 to take over the edge of the head 5 and lock the bezel on the head, a groove 18 in the part and a projection 19 on the catch 16 snapping into engagementwhen brought into alinement (permitted by the resilienc ot the catch) to lock tie catch in the position shown in full lines in Fig. and in dotted lines in Fig. 4-. it. nib 20 on the catch affords means for its manipulation.
The bezel 10 having been removed by swinging aside the catch 16 to the posiion shown in full lines in Fig. It, the button 53 can be passed through the buttor coat and the bezel tl'ier atter cut the head and locked by the lug 12 1G whereupon the elk s head 1 or sign and the watch dial will the outside oi the lapel and the w be covered by the la el.
The device constitutes a regular time piece from which the so may be readily ascertained by inspection.
I am aware that the presuit invention could be put to different es from those specified, the designs changed and the manner and construction of attachment or the parts altered without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and all such variations are. therefore, intended to be comprehended within the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a watch having a projection provided with a "atch dial on its end, and hands operated through the projection and playing over the dial, 01" a bezel detachahly eng ed with said projection and a swinging catch carried by (he bezel to engage the projection and lock tln. bezel thereon.
2. The combination with a watch having a projection provided with a round end, and having a dial on its face, oi. bands playing over the dial and operated from the watch through the projection, a round bezel de tuehubly engaging said round end of the bezel and round part of the projection preprojection, and a catch carried by the bezel venting rotation of the bezel, and a releasadapted to engage with the round'end of the hble catchoarried by the bezel and engageprojection to secure the bezel thereto. able with the round part of the projection. 15 5 3. The combination with a watch dial In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my having a projection provided with a round signature in presence of two witnesses. endaan d haylngzudial on its face of hands CLIFFORD VI BATES. playing 0\ er the dial and opereteu troln the watch through the projection, a round bezel I Witnesses: 10 engaging the round part of the pro ect1on, BURDETTE BLUE,
