To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK G. FAWKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combination Advertising N ovelty,and Toy, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to that class of toys adapted for advertising purposes; and my primary object is to provide a small and inexpensive device of the character indicated whichis well adapted to the purpose of use as an advertising novelty and also well adapted to serve as an instrument for the amusement of children.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a combination advertising novelty and toy constructed in accordance with my invention, the device being shown in a closed condition; Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the same in an open condition Fig. 3, a longitudinal sectional view of the device in the condition in which it is used for a toy, the section being taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a transverse section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 1. In the illustration given, A, A represent two leaves, of cardboard or other somewhat stiff material, connected together at one lateral edge of each leaf by a hinge a. The leaves are of concavo-conveX, or dished, form, the concave surfaces being turned toward each other, thereby giving body tothe device.

In the illustration 'iven, the leaves are shaped to conform to t e outlines of a ham. If desired, they may be made to conform to the appearance of a milk bottle, or other article. In any event, the leaves are preferably shaped so as to afford relatively narrow upper end-portions a which are concavoconvex in cross-section. Stretched across, from edge to edge of the contracted portion of one of the leaves is a flexible strip of, which may be of )aper or other suitable material, which wil serve as a reed. surface of the other leaf, A contains printed advertising matter relating to the brand of ham supposed to be known as X Y Z ham, and represented by the out shown on the inner surface of the leaf A.

While it is preferred to make the leaves of the device of cardboard, they may be made of any other suitable material, as may be desired. Preferably, the outer surfaces of the leaves are colored or pictured to give still more the similitude of a ham.

When the device is to be used as a musical instrument, the leaves are brought to the closed condition, and the device is held lightly between the fingers which engage the lateral edges of the leaves, in which condition the upper and lower ends of the leaves are slightly separated. By applying the li s at the contracted portions of the eaves, t 1e instrument may be blown, and the vibration of the reed is communicated to the leaves,

lending volume to the sound produced. By

simple manipulation, the sound may be varied within limits of considerable range, and a great deal of amusement will be afforded to children using the device.

The device may be produced at small cost, and is well adapted both to the urpose of advertising and to use as a toy. f course, it is to be understood that the advertising matter may be of any desired character, and that the form of the device may be varied.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearnes's of undertsanding only, and no undue limitation is to be understood therefrom.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the character set forth, comprising a pair of concave leaves having their concave surfaces turned toward each other and pivotally joined together at a lateral edge of each leaf, said leaves having contracted portions at one end, and a reed or like device applied to one of the leaves at the contracted portion thereof.

2. A device of the character set forth, comprising a pair of leaves having curved edges, each leaf having a contracted end portion, a hinge connecting said leaves centrally at a lateral edge portion of each leaf, and a reed device connected with the contracted end portion of one of said leaves.
