To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that l, GEORGE W. R. (JUL- BEn'rsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glezen, in the county of Pike and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Beds; and I do declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved road bed construction.
The object of the invention is to provide a road. bed which will be simple and durable in construction, one in which the parts may be readily assembled or separated and which will present many decided improvements over any of the road bed constructions now in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the embodiment illustrated, which is for illustrative purposes only and therefore not drawn to scale, the numeral 1 indicates the longitudinal tie sections which, as shown, are hollow and of approximately semi-circular form in cross-section. The track rails 2 comprise semi-circular base portions 3 which have their inner surfaces curved to 15 closely conform to the curvature of the tops of the tie sections, the side edges of the base portions resting upon longitudinal supporting flanges 4 formed upon opposite sides of the tie sections. The rails are also provided,
as usual, with central webs 5 and heads 6 which are the usual form. Attention is particularly called to the fact that by providing the tie sections with side flanges, as shown, the base portions of the rails are at all times held in an exact central position upon the ties, and that owing to the form of the tie sections and base portions of the rails, when a train or other vehicle passes over the track the pressure is evenly distributed upon the to) surfaces of the ties.
. 11 carrying out the objects of the present invention, a series of horizontally disposed transversely extending braces 7 are arranged between the rails and are provided at opposite ends with longitudinally disposed hearing plates 8 which fit the inner surfaces of the rail webs with the inner faces of the plates flush with the inner edges of the rail heads. Fastening bars 9 are arranged at the outer faces of the rail webs immediately opposite the bearing plates 8 of the braces 7, and are connected thereto by fastening bolts 10 extending through the bars and plates 9 and 8, respectively, and the rail webs and fastening nuts 11 screwed upon the bodies of the bolts against the inner faces of the bearing plates.
The base portions of the rails are firmly held upon the tops of the hollow ties by a series of vertically disposed clamps 12 arranged at both sides of the rails and provided at the upper and lower ends with inwardly extending heads or portions 13 and 14, respectively, to engage respectively longitudinal flanges 15 formed upon opposite sides of the rail bases and the bottom surfaces of the hollow ties. As shown in the drawings, each pair of oppositely disposed clamps is-secured in po sition by a fastening bolt 16 extending therethrough and through the hollow ties and nuts 17, screwii'ig upon the bodies of the bolts. By this construction it will be seen that the rails may be readily placed in operative position in a very expeditious manner and with the minimum labor on the part of the operator, and in fact that the road bed as a whole may be readily assembled or separated.
To connect the meeting ends of the tie sec tions together, I employ flat clamping plates 18 which are arranged under the bottoms of said sections and are provided at opposite side edges with upwardly extending side flanges 19 WfilCll clamp opposite sides of the sections, said plates being also held in position by vertically disposed clamps 20, similar to those heretofore described which engage the side flanges 15 of the rail portions and the bottoms of said plates. The ties and rails are also held in spaced relation and in perfect alinement by spacing bars 21 provided at opposite ends with pairs of up-turned clips 22 which engage and closely fit opposite sides of the tie sections, said spacing bars be-- ing held in position by set screws 23, screwing through the outer clips of the bars against the outer sides of the tie sections.
It is to be particularly observed that by forming the tie sections hollow, as shown, they may be used as conduits for electric or telegraph wires or as a protection for oil pipes or the like. These, however, are only a few of the numerous instances where the hollow feature of the ties may be taken advantage of.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described and ascertained the nature of my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a road bed of the class described, the combination with hollow longitudinal ties of approximately semi-circular form in crosssection, of track rails having curved base portions to closely fit the tops of the ties, longitudinal flanges formed at opposite sides of the base portions of the rails, a series of vertically disposed longitudinally spaced clamping members to removably hold the track rails upon the ties, said clamps provided at opposite ends with inwardly extending portions to engage the longitudinal flanges of the rails and the bottoms of the ties respectively, and fastening means for said clamps.
2. In a road bed of the class described, the combination with hollow rail supporting ties having convex tops and longitudinal side fianges, of track rails having curved base portions to closely fit upon the tops of the rails with the edges of their base portions seated upon the side flanges of the ties, a series of vertically disposed longitudinally spaced clamping members arranged at opposite sides of the ties and provided at opposite ends with inwardly extending portions to engage the side flanges and the bottoms of the rails and ties, respectively, and means for securing the clamping members to the ties, said means comprising bolts extending through the clamping members and the ties and nuts screwing upon the bolts.
3. In a road bed of the class described, the combination with hollow longitudinal ties, of
track rails removably seated thereon, horizontally disposed transversely extending brace-bars provided at opposite ends with longitudinal bearing plates to fit the inner sides of the rail webs, fastening plates at the outer sides of the rail webs opposite said bearing plates, and means for securing the bearing plates to the rail webs and to each other.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with two hollow rail supporting tie sections and a track rail provided at its base with longitudinal side flanges and seated on said tie sections, of means for connecting the meeting ends of the tie sections together, said means comprising fiat bearing plates arranged under the meeting ends of the tie sections and provided at opposite sides with side flanges to engage op osite sides thereof, and vertically disposed c amping members provided at opposite ends with portions to engage the "side flanges of the track rails and the bottom of the bearing plate, with means for securing said clamps to the tie sections.
5. In a road bed, the combination with a hollow tie having a convex top and longitudinal flanges formed at opposite sides thereof, of a track rail having a curved base portion to closely fit upon the tie with the lower edges of its base portion resting upon the flanges thereof, and means for removably securing the rail upon the tie.
6. In a roadbed, the combination with a hollow tie, ln -ng a convex top and longitudinal flanges formed at opposite sides thereof, of a track rail having a curved base portion to closely fit the top of the tie, adapted to seat upon the tie with its lower edges resting upon the flanges thereof and vertically disposed clamps having portions to engage the track rail and tie to removably secure the former upon the latter.
7. In a roadbed, the combination with a hollow tie having a convex top and longitudinal supporting flanges formed at opposite sides thereof, of track rail having a curved base portion to closely fit the top of the tie adapted to seat upon the tie with the lower edges of its base portion restin upon the flanges thereof, the base portion of the track rail having longitudinal flanges formed at opposite sides thereof and vertically disposed cramps having portions to engage the track rail and tie for removably securing the former upon the latter.
