To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, :MATTHEW M. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ironwood, in the county of Gogebic and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railway-Ties, of which the following is a speciflcation.
My invention relates to an improvement in metallic railway ties, and the object is to provide a permanent and secure means and method of fastening rails to the ties so as to give a continuous automatic fastening, thus preventing any possibility of accident by the rails spreading or becoming loosened.
Another object is to dispense with the wooden ties and the use of spikes and other appliances for fastening the rails.
The invention relates to other novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the tie; Fig. 3 is a top plan view; Fig. t is a view of the retaining plate, and Fig. 5 is a modification.
A, represents a metallic tie preferably stamped out of suitable metal and having the sides 1, 1 bent upwardly from the base 2, 2 of the tie. The tie is preferably open through the center as at 3, and the ends of the ties which receive the rails are much wider than the body of the central portion of the tie. The sides 4, 4 of the ends are bent upwardly from the base 5 of the end of the tie, and the portions 6, 6 are bent around and extend to about the middle of the tie from each side, thereby having the two ends meet. These end portions 6 are connected to the turned up flange S from the central portion of the tie. The end portions 6 and sides 1 of the tie are connected by angle-iron braces 10. The ends of the tie are cut out, as at 7, and between the cut out portions 7 and 3 is a transverse strip 9. Mounted on the transverse strip are supporting plates 12, 12 provided with base flanges 11, whereby to secure them to the transverse strip 9 and the end flanges 13 are secured to the end portions 6. The plate 12 has undercut notches 15 and 16 formed therein. The notch 15 being on a higher plane than the notch 16, as the rail rests upon the top of the plates, the flange is received in the notch 15 and the depending portion 18 of the rail flange is re ceived in the lower notch 16. The sides 4 of the ends of the tie have similar notches 15 and 16 formed therein. 7
After the rail has been placed upon the supporting plates 12 and the sides 4, 4 and the flange inserted beneath the notches 15, the turn-dovm flange 18 of the rail is received in the notch 16 at the same time the rail is placed in position on the tie. A retaining block 19 is inserted between the turn-down portion of the rail and the end portions, and the notches 20 received over the supporting plates and sides, thereby preventing the rail from getting out of place. The tie being open at the end permits the block to be made of sutlicient width and depth to bring the rail snugly into the notches 15 and 16, thereby preventing any possibility of the rail coming loose.
By the use of this tie a great deal of tamping can be done away with, that is, the base 2 and 5 and transverse strips 9 are the only base portions to the tie, as the center and ends are open and the ballast can be inserted within the tie, so that it can be placed on the level as the usual tie, but it affords a foundation which after the ballast has been inserted within and around the sides cannot be moved and which will save a great deal of labor when a tie is being substituted for an old wooden tie, and again there is no danger of the rail splitting after once being secured to the tie.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but:
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. A metallic tie, comprising a base and sides, supporting plates secured to the base, said plates and sides having notches formed therein for the flanges of the rails, and a retaining block inserted between the flange of the rail and the end portion of the tie.
2. The combination of a metallic tie and rail, a base and sides, supporting plates secured to the base, said plates and sides having notches therein for the reception of the rail, and a down-turned flange on the rail and a retaining block received between the downturned flange and the end of the tie.
