Letters Patent No. 91,772,1datedtunc 22, 1869.
IMPROVE!) v4DEVICE FOR TREATING- HIDES.
The Schedule referred to in theae Letters Patent and making part` of the same.
To all whom it may concern `Be.it known that I, HERMAN ROYER, of the cit -and county of San Francisco, and State of California,
have invented an Improved Machine for Treating Raw Hides; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sutlicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention 'or experiment.
My invention relates to an improved machine for converting raw hides, in their dry and rough state, into leather, suitable for belts, lacings, and other purposes, and is animprovement on a patent issued to myself and Louis Royer, for a. machine for a similar purpose, saidY patent being dated May 12, 1868.
rhis improvement consists in constructing the machine so that the hide, when properly secured in it, may be twisted each way, back and forth, until it becomes soft and pliable, thus rendering it capable of being used for many purposes without in any manner injuring the texture ofthe leather. To more fully illustrate and jexplain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, which represents a side view of the machine.
Similar letters of-,reference in the figure indicate like parts.
A is the lower portion or foundation of the machine, and B, the upper portion, the two being of wood, and
.of the same size, and joined together by the vertical posts C C.
Upon the top of the upper portion, B, is a horizontal shaft, D, bearing at each end in b oxes on theblocks E E. vThis shaft carries the two independent bevel-pinions or drivers F Il" The bevelled wheel G is attached to the vertical shaftI, which passes through the upper portion of the frame B, and has a slot, c, in its end.
A cylinder, J, surrounds the shaft I, and is arranged to revolve with and slide back and forth on theshaft; and its ends are formed into couplings, which engage with reverse couplings on the pinions, asit is moved from side to side.
In the middle of the cylinder J is a groove, c, into which a lug, d, on the end of the lever K, projects, so
that, by moving the lever from side to side, the cylinder is caused to couple with the pinions alternately, thus carrying the follower in an opposite direction each time the cylinder is shift-ed.
A strong bar, L, moves loosely up and down the verticalfposts C O being guided by holes in each end of the bar. From the middle of this bar theshaft I rises, and is provided with a slot, a', in its end.
The hide to be treated, after it has been deprived of its hair, is secured at each end in the slots a and a' of the vertical shafts I I', by set-screws t i', and the cylinder J is caused to engage with one of the pinions, and-the shaft is set in `motion, which causes the hide to be twisted between the two shafts.
A weight is bling belowtlie bar L, which keeps the hide drawn taut as it twisted, the bar L moving up the vertical posts as the hide is contracted in length.
After the hide has been twisted in one direction,
the coupling is changed to the opposite pinion, which causes the shaft I to turnin the opposite direction, unwinding the hide, and again twisting it, and that, without changing the direction of revolution of the horizontal shaft D. This winding and unwinding is continued until the hide has become flexible and soft, after which it is treated with oil or tallow, in the usual way.
By the use of this machine, I am. enabled to give the raw hides a twisting motion in either direction alternately, thus thoroughly breaking the fibre, and forming a soft and tlexible' substance, the operation being quickly performed.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Converting raw hides into leather, by twist-ing them spil-ally in either direction alternately, substantially as described.
' 2. The device, consisting of a reversing-apparatus, the reversible shaft I, and the ,Weighted sliding bar L, with the stationary shaft I', the whole constructed substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal. H. ROYER. [1.. S.]
Witnesses:
WILLIAM STANIEORTH, J. L. BOONE.
