To all whom it may concern.-
ifinitml slaw,
JOHN BRIGHTBlLL, OF LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA. I
Letters Patent No. 91,710, dated June 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAIN-SEPARATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part Blithe same.
' Be it known that I, J 01111 BRIGHTBILL, of Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new andusefnl Improvements in Grain-Separators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof-reference being had to the acform a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and
Figure'2, a sectional side elevation.
AA represent the frame of the machine, in the rear part of which is an inclined board, B, on which the grain is placed At a suitable point on the inclined board B, is a curve, on which is placed a series of rows of pins, or teeth, a a.- V V Above these pins is placed a roller, 0, on a shaft, D, said shaft having its -bearings in the sides of the frame A. a V, p
The roller 0 is also provided with rows of pins, or teeth 0 e, which work in among the pins a a, separating the grain from the straw, and carrying itdown the inclined board B, then up the inclined perforated screen E. p
The straw, after beingcarried under and in front of the roller 0, passes under a series of hinged arms, F F, which rise up to allow the straw to pass, but
immediately fall down again, preventing it from returning.
The rakes G G then take the straw, carrying it up the inclined screen E, and letting it fall down at the front end of the machine.
The rakes G G consist of bars placed lengthways in the machine, with teeth on their under side, and arranged on two crank-shafts H H, which have their bearingsin the sides of theframe A.
These shafts are, at their ends, outside of the frame, provided with pulleys I I, one of which is connected by a band, J, with a pulley on the main shaft D.
The pulleys 1 I, on the other side of the machine,
being connected by a pitman, K, it will be seen that the regular raking-motion is obtained for the rakes G G.
While the straw is being thus carried off, the grain falls through the holes in the perforated screen E, on to the inclined board L, which is, by side-pieces, attached to said screen, forming, as it were, a box, open at one end.
, spout R.
This box is suspended, in proper position, in the frame A, by means of bars M M, pivoted to the frame and the box, enabling the said boxto move backward and forward. The means for producing this motion will be hereinafter set forth.
When the grain has fallen down on the board L, it drops through the opening b, on to a board, N, which is provided with a series of pins, '1', c, at its front end, thence on to the screen 0. a
The dust, cheat, 860., go through the said screen,-
and pass out at one side of the machine, through the spout P. The grain goes over the screen, and out on the other side of the machinej'through the The board N, screen 0, and spouts P and R, are suitably arranged in one box, with open front and back.
In rear of the screen 0, is a drum, S, in which the fan T is placed.
This fan is mounted on the shaft V, which has its hearings in the sides of the frame A, and is, at one end provided with a pulley, w. v
A belt, 0:, connects this pulley with a pulley on the main shaft D, and thus motion is communicated to the fan.
The other end of the shaft V is crank-shaped, and
.provided with two pit-man-rods.
One of these, Y, connects with a lever, Z, which is pivoted to the opposite side of the frame A, and also to the under side of the boardL, whereby the backward and forward motion of said board, and of the inclined perforated board or screen E is obtained.
The other pitinan, f, connects with a bent lever, g, pivoted "to the'side of the frame A, and this lever, by means of a rod, 71, to the box containing the spouts P and R, whereby a reciprocating-motion is given to said box.
The main shaft D is turned by means of a crank,-
.or by any other suitable means.
The cylinder 0 is covered by a box-lid, m, and the whole or a part of the machine, where the rakes are situated, is also covered with a lid, 11., as shown in fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- J OHN'BRIGHTBILL. [L s.]
