' DANIEL H. TALBERIOF INDIANAPOLIS, IN DIANA.
GAME APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL H. TALBERT, of Indianapolis, county 'of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Game Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is'to improve the construction of game apparatus of the type known as box ball, a bowling game.
The chief feature of this invention resides in the means for resetting or returning to normal position paddles that are adaptedto be struck by balls rolled along an alley. This means includes a particular crank shaft and lever construction as more fully set forth 7 hereafter by which very satisfactory and effective actuation of the resetting bar is attained so that the paddles can be easily, certainly and completely reset or moved to a normal position against the action of the springs that engage the paddles for holding them in normal position.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the game apparatus with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section through the device, one paddle being shown actuated in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the device, parts being broken away and the changed position of parts shown in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through a portion of the device on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is the same view as that shown in Fig. 5 with the parts in nor mal position.
This game apparatus has an alley 10 mounted onlegs 11 with a front corner post 12. At the rear of the alley there is a frame supported on legs 13 and 14 and along the front of said frame there is a stationary transverse board or plate 15 extending over the rear end of the alley and elevated-somewhat above the same. There is also a transverse rod 16 mounted below and slightly to the front of said plate 15 on which paddles 17 are fulcrumed between their ends so as to be top-heavy. When in vertical position the lower ends of these paddles project close Specification of Letters Patent.

enough to the alley to be struck by the balls 18. The paddles are held normally in an upright position by springs 19' extending forwardly from the plate 15. On the upper part of said plate 15 numerals are located over the paddles indicating their playing values.
When a paddle is struck its upper end is dislodged from the spring 19 and it assumes a horizontal position and is retained in that position by gravity, as the forward. end is heavier than the rear end, and the rear end engages the under side of the resetting plate 20 which is at its rear upper edge hinged to the rear lower edge of the stationary plate 15, as seen'in Fig. 2. The resetting plate 20 is normally in an elevated and substantially horizontal position. A A curtain 22 is secured to the rear surface of the plate 15 and hangs downwardly behind the resettin plate 20 for the purpose of checking the balls. There is also a curtain 23 fastened to the ball receiving bottom 24 at the rear end and hung over the transverse rod 25 suspended from the top 16 by the rods 27, so that the forward end of said curtain depends in the path of the ball. The bottom 24 slopes forwardly and to the middle and directs the balls into the return chute 28 that extends to the forward part of the apparatus under the post 12.
After a person has played and some or all of the paddles have been struck and moved into a horizontal position,,the same are reset or moved to the vertical position by drawing the lever 30 and thereby the rod 31 that runs through the guides 32 on the legs 11 and is adjustab 1y connected with the vertical lever 33 fulcrumed to the lower part of the post 13 at 34. To the upper end of said lever 34 there is an arm 35 pivoted that is in turn pivoted to the arm 36 which is rigidly connected to a crank shaft 37 fulcrumed in the upper part of the post 13 and having on its inner end a rigidly secured arm 38 having a slot 39 in its free end through which a pin 40 extends that is secured to the free edgeor of the resetting plate 20 forces all of the paddles into a vertical position and causes their upper ends to catch under the springs 19. V-Jhen the handle 30 at the forward. end of the apparatus is released, 7 the spring 41, which at its rear end is secured to the side 42 of the rear frame and at the other end is connected with the lever 33, draws said lever 33 rearwardly into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3, which returns the resetting plate to its upper normal position. ready to serve as astop for the lower ends of the paddles when struck.
V' hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A game apparatus including a frame, an alley, paddles fulcrumed thereover between their ends adapted to be struck by balls from a vertical to a horizontal position,
a resetting plate for returning the paddles 1,
to their normal position, a rock shaft mounted in the frame with an arm secured rigidly to each end thereof, a connection l: etween one of said; arms and the resetting plate for actuating the latter, a lever pivoted to the frame at its lower end, a connecting bar pivotally connected with the upper end of said lever and to one of the arms on said crank shaft, a spring for holding said lever so that said resetting plate can be maintained in its normal position, and means at the forward end of the apparatusfor actuating said lever against the pull of said spring.
2. A game apparatus including a. frame, an alley, paddles fulcrumed thereover between their ends and adapted to he struck by halls of said arm, a lever pivoted to the outside of the frame for rocking said shaft, a spring connected with said lever that tends to elevate said resetting plate and hold it in its upper position, and means. operated from the front of the apparatus for actuating said lever against the action of said spring for moving said resetting plate down ardl y to l l g l l i I reset the paddles.
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto atlixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
itnesses:
