ARTICLE OF FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 9, 1909.
Application filed June 29, 1907. Serial No. 381,436.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL WERNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Article of Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in a table, desk, bench, chair and similar article of furniture, embodying means on the article for supporting the legs thereof and admitting of the removal of the same for knock-down purposes, while providing strengthening devices for the corners and sides of said article where the leg supports exist, as will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a table embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section thereof on an enlarged scale. Figs. 3 and l represent perspective views of corner members employed, taken from opposite direc tions. Fig. 5 represents a horizontal section of a portion on line :ca;, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 represents a top or plan view of a side portion thereof. Fig. 7 represents a front elevation of a side portion, the same being on a reduced scale, the description of the invention being hereinafter limited to tables.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :A designates a corner piece, which consists of the angularly connected plates B, C, and the reinforcing brackets or flanges D on the inner faces thereof. On the exterior of the piece A at the angle thereof is the web or rib E, which vastly strengthens the same at said angle, and has projecting therefrom and integrally connected therewith the eyes or sockets F, E, which occupy a position at the corner of a table G in the space between the side and end boards H, H, thereof, it being seen that the said sockets receive the upper end of the leg J, whereby the latter may be nicely and firmly connected with the table as a support therefor, and when the table is to be packed, carried or stored, the leg may be nicely removed from the table, the effect of which is evident.
The piece A is screwed or otherwise secured to the boards H, H, the screws when employed passing throu 'h the ears K on the plates B, G, into sai boards, while the flanges D have inside battens L screwed or otherwise secured to them, it being noticed that the upper and lower faces of said flanges have recesses M therein to receive the adjacent portions of said battens, it being evident that the pieces A are firmly connected with the boards H, and the corner of the table vastly strengthened by the same. The ends of the boards H are covered by the angular facing plates N, which join the exterior of the plates B, C, and serve to prevent said ends from being exposed and which strengthen the same, while also presenting an attractive finish.
On the side of the table, I provide for the application of the leg P thereto. In this case, I divide the board H, and in the space Q thus formed, I locate the eyes or sockets it, which are adapted to receive the upper end of said leg and which project from the plate S, the latter occupying the back of said space Q and being provided with ears T, which are screwed to the opposite portions of the board H, as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
Projecting horizontally inward from the plate S, are flanges or brackets U, with which the adjacent portions of the battens L are screw or otherwise connected, thus providing a strong connection for the divided side board H, and affording convenient means for securing and supporting the leg I, while readily admitting of the removal of the same for the purpose of packing, carrying and storing of the table.
The ends of the board H, caused by the division Q, are covered by the angular facing lates V, which join the exterior of the plate S and serve to prevent said ends from eing exposed and which strengthens the same, while also presenting an attractive finish.
In order to cause the legs to tightly fit the I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: v
1. In an article of furniture of the class described having a removable leg, s aced integral sockets adapted to receive an embrace portions of said leg, an angular plate integral with and carrying said sockets outward beyond the angle thereof, a vertical reinforce extending outwardly from said plate at the angle thereof, an integral inwardly extending reinforce connected with said plate adjacent each socket, and means for securing said plate in position on said article.
2. In an article of furniture of the character stated, a body, a removable leg, and a corner piece for said bod said piece being com osed of connected p ates extending inwarc ly at an angle to each other and reinforced, a vertical rib extending outwardly from said plates at their angle and separated sockets integral with and extending outwardly beyond said rib to receive the upper portion of a leg.
3. In an article of furniture of the character stated, a body having an opening, a removable leg, and a side piece for said body disposed in said opening, said piece being composed of a plate and separated leg-embracing sockets on said late projecting outwardly therefrom, angu ar face )lates independent of said side piece, anc means for connecting said piece with said body, said face plates being disposed at opposite sides of the leg at the opening-in the body.
4. In an article of furniture of the character stated, a body, a removable leg therefor, a socket adapted to receive and hold said leg, and a carrier for said socket rigid therewith and composed of an angular plate, a vertical rib rigid with and extending outwardly from said plate at the angle thereof and a flange connected to and disposed between the vertical walls of said plate in the angle between them and adapted to rein} force the plate and to receive battens and provide additional means for connection with said body.
5. In an article of furniture, a corner piece composed of angularly connected plates with ears and reinforcing flanges extending between said plates in the angle between them, a vertical rib on the exterior thereof at the angle, and separated sockets connected with and extended outward beyond said rib in vertical alinement to receive the upper ortion of a leg.
6. In an artic e of furniture of the character stated, a frame comprising top, side and end pieces and battens secured t ereto, the
latter being on the interior thereof, and
angular devices at the corners of said frame having alining sockets extending beyond said frame for removably connecting the legs and said body together, said devices having reinforces connected to and extending between the walls of said angular devices at the angle between the same to receive the battens, said frame being also connected to said devices, said battens being disposed near the top and bottom of tie frame at right angles to each 0th r with. their ends at the angles of the frame bearing against and secured to said reinforces.
7. In an article of furniture, a corner piece com osed of connected plates extending inwar ly at an angle to each other, reinforcing webs or flanges connected to and extending between said plates in the angle between the same, a vertical rib extending outwardly from said plates at the angle thereof, and spaced horizontal sockets or rings connected to and extending outwardly beyond said rib, said sockets being adapted to receive the upper portion of a leg.
