IMPROVE!) MACHINE FOR REFITTING- CONICAL VALVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, ISAIAH NUTT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Retting Valves, of which thefollowingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part ot"` this specificatiom'and in 4capable of feed through a slot. in the concave, for action 'in or against the valve, asI the latter is rotated within the concave.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A :represents the frame of the machine, which is made to carry, at its one end, a stationary .concave rest or guide, B, the samebcing a hollow cone made smooth on its interior, and having a longitudinal slot,
e, cut through-it on the one side, which slot may extend the length of the cone, for thereabouts.
lfbewother end of the frame carrles :tn-adjustable centre, C, which. is arranged in line with the centre of the concave, and which serves, in connection .with the concave, to centre and hold the valve D to be reiitted, as represented in tig. l, the bearing-portion, s, of the valve, or the valve proper, as it may be termed, resting on and being guided by the smooth inteliorV surface of ,the stationary concave B, Rotary motion is communicated to thevalve by a ratchet-brace applied to the adj nstable centre, Vthrough a fork connecting the latter vwith the valve, or in any othersuitable manner, and said valve, whilst being rotated, borne up against the interior of the concave.
y E is the cutter, which may either be straight or concave ou its cutting-edge, and, lying loosely on a support, ll,'s proected through the slot a, in the concave,
up against the valve, by means of a lever, G, with which said cutter may gear through a pin, b, on its face, being made to lit or enter any one ot' a series of notches c, in the lever, according to the diameter: of the valve to beoperated on; but such adjustment is, or may be dispensed with, where the edge of the valve s is straight, instead of convex, and the cutter, having a straight cutting-edge, be constructed to extend the full le'ngth of the slot a, or thereabouts.
In such latter case, said cutter, by reason of the length of its cutting-nose or end, will answer for various diameters of valves without adjustment along the support F, and, as it is important that its cuttingedge should at all times be in line or parallel to the side oi the concave B, it projects through or into, it may be guided in its feed up against the valve, by setting it to slide within a recess in the support F, as indicated by red lines in fig. 1, or it may be otherwise suitably guided.
From this description, it will be seen, that while the valve is at once readily adjusted to'insure its being reitted true, it is both guided and supported by the smooth interior surface of the stationary concave B. This 1s in no way analogous to a revolving concave mill, which necessitates the use of an additional centre, and presents several cutting-edges that cannot be sharpened, to suit diiierentshaped edges to the valve, as can a. single detachable cutter as employed in this, my machine.
Such previous machines, in fact, have not been adapted to relit valves of al rounded form on their edge, for which form of valve my invention is particularly applicable.
What is here claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the adjustable centre C, and stationary concave B, constructed smooth on its interior, to form a rest and guide for the valve, of the sliding cutter E, arranged to puoject through a slot, a, in the concave, substantially as specilied.
ISAIAH NUTT.
