To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS J. NAULTY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, lennsylysnis, have invented 'e-tziin improvements in Door-Operating Devices, of which the following is e specification.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in means for operating the doors of a passenger car, partieulerly those at the fori 1rd end of the oer for the exit of passenend my invention is especially adapted to the type of car in Whioh the passenger pays the lore on entering the oer.
l ne object of my present invention is to so construct the door operating mechanism that it will be within essy resell oi the motorinsn or other operator of the oer, so that a slight movement of the operating mechanism will either open or close the door.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for locking the door in either of its two positions.
in the accompanying drawings: igure is s seetionei elevation illustrating the our end showing my 1'\ ention Fig. .2, is 2; sectional plan View; sndhigs. 3' and 4 are detached perspective of the operating mechanism. A is the platform of the cor inclosed at one end 57'' the ordinary vestibule At one J o; the platform are two panels B"speced sport to form n channel for the sliding door which is arranged to'olose the exit door- The opposite side of the oer may be closed by doors B of any suitable construction; these doors are moved to allow free ingress and egress when the platform is at the rear of the cor. I
"he door D is operated in the following mennerz?ivoted to a, bracket 0 at the floor of the cor is s handled lever C, this lever extends through e slot in a segment C hoving s noteh a at The handled lever 8 extends through the floor of the nletform and is eonnected by 1 red to en erm e secured to e rock shell; w i mounted in beer ings e secured to the underside of the plotiorm. Mounted on the end of the shaft E and extending into the space between the two panels B is an arm E having a slot e at its upper end, and secured to the back of the door is a pin (l which extends into the slot e in the lever E.
When the lever is inthe position illustrated in the drawings the door is closed and the lever C is held in position in one of the notches to. By shifting the lever slightly to one side it is clear of the notch end by pulling it the door will he opened, then the lever will spring into the notch c and hold the door open. When the door is in the closed position it-oennot be forced open from the outside before the cor comes to a sto y simply shifting the lever the door can he quickly thrown open to allow for the exit of passengers, and the mechanism for operating the door is within easy reach of the motor-men so that he can operate the door Without leaving his post. 1 i
-'lhe combination of e car, a platform at one end of the oer, a vestibule inclosing said platform and having a doorway at one side of the platform, a siding door arranged to elose said. doorway, en onereting lever pivoted to the floor of the platform at the front end having one srm extending to such :1 height as to be grasped by the motormsn, the other arm of the lever extending through the floor, s shaft under the latform floor having two arms, one arm being'connected to the door, and a rod ettsched to the other arm end to the lower arm of the operating lever.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my nsnle to this specification, in the i 'iresence of two subscribing Witnesses TiiiLF-EEN, WM. A. EARR.
