To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALTER E. PARE, a citizen ofthe United States,iesidi11g at Sparta, in the county of Christian, State oll Missouri, have invented certain new and usel'ul Improvements in Lubricators; and I do hereby .declare the following to be a lull, clear, and exact description ol' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to oil cups and more particularly to that class which are automatically operated.
The object of the invention is to provide an oil cup including a thermostatic device which will be expanded by the heat generated from the bearing in connection with which the cup is used, to open the valve ol' the cup and permit flow of lubricant to the bearing, and t e invention not only resides in the provision of such a thermostatic device but also in the provision ol' a novel form ol' valve which may be adjusted so as to be opened to a greater or less degree when operated by the thermostatic device, dependingl upon the nature oi' the bearing and other conditions which might prevail.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation or' an oil cup embodied in my invention, Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view talren centrally therethrough, Fig. 3 is a similar view but considerably enlarged and taken through the valve and the thermostatic device, Fig. f1 is a detail perspective view of the thermostatic device removed irom the cup, and, Fig. 5 is a similar view of the valve and its stem removed from the cup.
As Shown in the drawings the device comprises a reservoir constructed ol' the usual cylindrical glass case 7 and the upper and lower heads 8 and 9 respectively which are flanged and between which the cylindrical glass case 7 is clamped. Formed integral with the heads 8 and 9 are tubular sections 10 and 1.1 respectively which have a threaded connection with each other as at 12 whereby the heads may be brought together to clamp the cylindrical glass case as above stated. The tubular section 11 is rovided adjacent its point of connection wit i the head 9 with an opening 12 for the passage ol' oil from the cup formed by the heads and the cylindrical glass case, into the feed nozzle 13 `for the cup, Which nozzle terminates in the usual threaded nipple 14 whereby the cup may be connected with the bearing which it is to lubricate. Swiveled upon the top olI the head 8 is the usual closure plate 15 l'or the filling opening 16 in the said head.-
Formed within the tubular section 1 1 at the point ol' junction o1' the same with the lower head 9 is a valve seat 17 upon which a valve 1S normally rests, the said. valve being provided with a stem 19 which projects into the tubular section 10 and is provided with a squared portion at its upper end, the said portion being indicated by the numeral 20. This squared portion extends into a squared socket 21 formed in the stem 22 ol' a turn button 23, it being understood ol' course that the button may be turned to rotate the said valve stem and the purpose oi' this rotation will be presently described. The stem ol the turn button is loosely received in a bore formed in a threaded sleeve nut 24 which sleeve nut is removably threaded into the upper end ol' the tubular section 10. A spring 25 is engaged upon the valve stem above mentioned and bears at its lower end against a collar 26 formed integral with the said valve stem adjacent the lower end thereoil and at its upper end against the lower end o'll the stem ol` the turn button and this spring serves to normally hold the valve to its seat as heretofore stated.
In the lower end of the valve stem there is formed a threaded bore 27 in which is engaged the threaded upper end portion of a stein 28, the lower end of the stem being eX- tended into an inverted hollow conical drip member 29 which is secured concentrically to the stem by means of connecting portions 30. Formed integral with the drip member is an arm 31 which is offset at its lower end as at 32 and squared as at 33 for reception in a squared socket 34 formed in the thermostatic member of the valve. This member is cylindrical in form and comprises a pair of sections which have hinged connection with each other and which are hollow so that when the members are connected they form a cup in which is contained volatile lluid and the thermostatic member when so filled with iluid is placed within the feed nozzle 13 lor the valve and rests upon the shoulder 34 formed by a reduction 35 in the bore ol' the nozzle, there being an annular series of lugs 36 formed integral with the shoulder to support the thermostatic member inslightly raised position with respect thereto so as to permit of passage of the lubricant around the member and beneath thesame and through the threaded niple 14.
rom the foregoing description of my in- Vention it will be observed that should the bearing have heat to any appreciable degree, the fluid within the thermostatic member will be volatilized thus causing the member to expand and lift the valve from its seat through the instrumentality of the arm 31 and the dri member 29, it being understood that the oilpwill iiow along the stem Z8 and into and through the said member 29 and will drip therefrom to the bearing.
It will be understood from the foregoing that by reason of the" fact that the arm 31 is squared at its lower end and seated in a squared socket, it will be held stationary when the turn button before mentioned is turned and that consequently the turning' of this button will result in a vertical adjustment of' the arm and that such Vertical acll container located within the discharge noz- Zle, an arm having an integral stem which has threaded adjustable connection with the valve, the arm having positive connection with the said hollow expansible container, a
stem for the Valve, and means whereby the stem may be turned to adjust the arm with respect thereto.
