Letters Patent No. 91,272, dated June 15, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SYRING-E FOR DESTROYING- COTTON-PLANT WORMS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, ANTONIO R0151EA, of Galveston, in thc county of Galveston, and State of Texas, have invented a new and improved Instrument to be Used in Destroying Cotton-Worms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. View showing the manner of using the instrument.

This invention relates toV a new and improved instrument, which is especially adapted for use in destroying worms which infest cotton-plants.
` The object is toobtain an instrument by which a line spray, of any suitable chemical solution which will destroy the worms, can be showered upon the plants in large quantities, and which will admit of being quickly lled with the liquid, through an enlarged inlet-passage, which will close, and remain -closcd during the expulsion of the liquid, as will be hereinafter explained.
To enable others skilled in the ait to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, iig. 2, I `have represented, in section, the instrument in question.
It consists of a cylindricalbody or barrel, D, of any uitable length and diameter to be conveniently hanled.
A represents a solid piston, which is applied within the cylinder D, and suitably packed around its circumference, as showuat c, and which has connected centrally to one end a rod, a, enclosed within a hollow rod b.
These rods pass through a stuiiing-box, formed on a cap, C, from which a short air-escape tube extends, for allowing the expulsion of air during the drawing back of the piston A.
Opposite the cap C, a fiat-face nozzle, A', is applied to the barrel D, which is screwed in place and packed, so as not to leak around its joints, and which is finely perforated, for causing the liquid to he expelled from the barrel in tine spray.
In the centre of this nozzle A' is an induction-tube, g, containing a valve, h, which is applied on-a stem, l, and guided by a cross-bar, m, -and which opens inwardly, for allowing liquid to be drawn into the barrel D, in a large stream.
It will be seen from the above description, that the instrument is provided with a nozzle, having tine discharge-passages, through which the liquid is forced slowly, in the form oi'spray, and that the same nozzle is provided with an inlet-tube, through which liquid can hev rapidly drawn into the barrel for lilling it, but which will be automatically shut at the commencement of discharging the liquid through said nozzle,
and kept shut during such discharge.
This. will avoid the necessity of removing the cap A' to lill the barrel with liquid, and also avoid the loss of time which would be required to draw the liquid through the line discharge pertbrations.
While I prefer to adopt an instrument constructed as shown, I do not confine myself to the precise construction, as other equivalent means may be employed, which would etiect sthe same result of discharging through tine pertbrations, and filling through the same nozzle containing these perforations.
With this instrument I pass between the rows of cotton, and shower over the plants a liquid containing any ingredient or ingredients which kill the worms without injuring the plants.
By having one or more persons to assist by carrying the vessels containing the liquid, ten acres or more of plants can be showered per day with a single instrument.
