WILLIE BROCKETTE, OF WESTMORELAND, TENNESSEE.
CHURN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Application filed. May 25, 1908. Serial No. 434,858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIn Bnoonn'r'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westmoreland, in the county of Macon, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a churn and more particularly to the class of churns havin means for collecting the butter when former and for raising it out of the churn when collected.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a churn having a body or receptacle in which is removably mounted a perforated support upon which butter accumulates when formed and which support is adapted to drain the collected butter and for raising it out of the churn, and a detachable handle connected to oppositely disposed arms secured. to the support whereby the latter can be withdrawn from said churn.
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention, for example consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more inlly described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention which will enable those skilled in the art to practice the same, while the novelty of the invention will be included in the claims succeeding the description, and it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications will be resorted to such as come properly within the scope of the said appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the churn. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the churn. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View. Fig. 1 is a top plan view of an auxiliary presser disk. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of the churn with the perforated support elevated, a detachable handle thereon and the auxiliarv presser disk in position thereon.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates the cylindrical churn body which may be of any suitable material and size and has a bottom 11 integral therewith and a remov able cover 12 of circular formation adapted to detachably fit in the mouth portion of the cylindrical churn body 10 and which cover has an inclined peripheral flange 13 which has its bearing against a beveled circumfer ential edge 14 at the mouth of the churn body when the cover is in position on the same.
Removably mounted within the cylindrical churn body 10 is a support 15 having an annular rim or flange 16 and which support is provided with a plurality of openings 17. Said support 15 fits the interior of the churn body 10 and rests on the bottom 11 thereof when it will collect butter being formed in the churn body and when raised for removing the same the milk or residue of cream will pass through the said openings 17 and thereby drain the butter collected upon the support as it is taken from the churn. EX- tending upwardly from the support 15 at diametrically opposite points thereof are arms 18, the lower ends of which pass through openings 19 contained in said support and are connected or united by a cross piece 20 which latter extends across the un derfacc of the support 15 and is held secured thereto in any suitable manner. The opposite upper ends of the arms 18 lie in notches or recesses 21 formed in the flange '13 of the cover and project a suitable distance beyond the upper extremity of the churn body 10 and terminate in eyes 22.
Centrally of the cover 12 is an opening 23 through which slides a dasher shaft 24 carrying at its lower end flat horizontally disposed dasher blades 25 crossing each other at right angles and the adjoining faces of which are correspondingly recessed as at 26 for interlocking engagement and secured to the dasher shaft in any desirable manner.
To remove the support 15 from the churn body 10 there is provided a detachable handle 27 having hook terminals 28 for detachably engaging the eyes 22 of the arms 18 of said support. 1
To press the butter collected upon the support 15 after being formed in the churn so as to form the particles of butter in a solid mass there is provided a separate or auxiliary presser disk or member 29 having a handle 30 and provided with notches or recesses 31 in its periphery at diametrically opposite oints to receive the arms 18 and this presser disk or member 29 is only brought into use when the cover 12 has been removed from the mouth of the churn body 10 and the support 15 upon which the butter formed has een collected is elevated to the top of the churn body 10 or has been entirely removed from the latter.
It is clearly apparent that to remove the support 15 from the churn body 10 it is necessary to remove the cover 12 from the mouth portion of said body and by attaching the andle 27 with the arms 18 said support can be readily and easily withdrawn from the churn.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a churn body having a beveled edge mouth portion, of a removable perforate supfiort having diametrically opposite vertica y arrange arms projecting beyond the mouth portion and terminating in eyes, a bail handle having hooked extremities detachably engagin the eyes to remove the support from the b0 y, a centrally perforated cover having diametrically arranged notches to accommodate the arms, said cover having a beveled flange adapted to rest upon said beveled edge mouth portion, and a reciprocating dasher working in said body.
2. The combination with a churn body having a beveled ed e mouth portion, of a removable perforate sup ort having diametrically o posite vertica ly arranged arms projecting eyond the mouth portion and terminating in eyes, a bail handle having hooked extremities detachably en agin the eyes to remove the support from t e bo y, a centrally perforated cover having diametrically arranged notches to accommodate the arms, said cover having a beveled flange resting on said beveled ed e mouth ortion, a reciprocating dasher wor ing in said body, and an auxiliary presser disk having diametrically arran ed notches to engage said arm to guide the isk toward and away from said support.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIE BROCKETTE.
