SHAVING-CUP.

One of the main objects of this invention is' to provide a shaving cup having a soap holder in the bottom thereof which is adapted to hold the soap above the 'water in the cup so that the soap will be comparatively dry except on its upper surface where the shaving brush comes in contact with it.

Another object of the invention is to provide a collapsible soap holder which will automatically adjust itself to the wear on the soap, so that it will always fit closely against the upper surface of the cup, the inclosing part of the -device moving downward as the soap is used.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a removable soap holder which will completely inclose the soap cake except the upper surface thereof whereby the shaving brush will contact with only the upper surface of the soap cake, the sides and bottom thereof being protected from the brush and also from the water in the cup.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cup with .an integral saucer-like flange at its bottom to serve as a dish to catch any overflow from the cup. To the bottom of the cup is secured a suitable cushion to prevent theV cup sliding on the usual marble or glass top fixtures used in barber shops.

A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a removable soap holder which may be used as a soap box for convenience in rcarryliong a cake of shaving soap in a traveling Other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully hereinafter appear.

like flange 2 to form a shallow drip cup to receive any dripping from the main receptacle l. In the cup, at the bottom thereof, is formed a central upwardly extending boss or raised portion 3 which is circular in plan view. The bottom of the cup is recessed as at l to receive the rubber plug 5, said plug being' provided with an enlarged flange part 6 forming a yielding, anti-friction wearing plate or support, so that the device may be supported on the usual marble or glass shelves or fixtures used in barber' shops, and the like, without any danger of the cup slipping or sliding on its support, or marring the support.

Fitting the boss 3 is a cylindrical soap support 7 which is approximately as high,

or slightly higher than the thickness of the average soap cake. This'support is provided with an upstanding annular flange 8 to retain the soap in position. The support 7 may be as high as desired, but preferably is of sufficient height to hold the soap above the water in the cup. It is desirable that the soap cake be kept dry, and to this end the water level in the cup is preferably kept below the upper end of the flange 8. To maintain the soap cake 9 in position on the support 7 I provide a retaining and protecting ring 10 which fits slidably over the support 7, and is provided at its upper end with an inwardly extending horizontal annular flange l1 which rests upon the upper surface of the soap cake, as shown clearly in Fig. l. The protecting ring l0 is free to slide down the support 7 as the soap cake is worn down by the application of the shaving brush thereto through the circular opening '12 made by the annular flange l1. The protecting ring is formed with a solid vertical wall, its lower'end telescoping over the upper end of the soap support, s o that the side of the soap will be protected from contact with the brush and from the action of the water in the cup. This is very material. The wastage, by reason of the brush engaging the side of the soap cake is considerable and the deterioration of the soap cake by contact with water makes up the greater part of the loss of shaving soap. By my invention this wastage is entirely avoided and the soap cake is held high and dry above the water in the cup; the brush contacting` with the soap only through the opening in the top of the protecting ring.

The soap support 7 is removable from the boss 3 at the bottom of the cup and when so removed may be inverted and used as the inner or tray part of a soap box to contain the soap cake. In this use of the parts the protecting ring slides over the open end ot the support in the nature of a cover,l the flange 1l serving to hold the soap cake Within the support, said support and the retaining ring in this arrangement of the parts forming a soap containing box especially adapted for the use of travelers. It Will be manit'est that a shaving brush may be applied to the soap through the opening` l2 when the parts are arranged as shoivn in Fig. 3.

lt Will be noted that the water is contained in the cup proper and that the retaining and protecting ring moves independently o't' the Water containing cup. The advantage otl this is that the Weight of the Water is not supported by the soap. lt is also manifest that the Weight of the brush will be supported by the cup proper when said brush is left in the cup and the retaining ring is tree to be moved vertically independently of the Water containing cup. By forming the retaining and protectingI ring as described the said ring and the soap may be removed from the cup Whenever desired and placed therein, Without removing the Water from the cup.

Having thus described my invention, What I 'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A shaving cup comprising a cup proper adapted to serve as a Water holder, a soap support therein and extending upwardly trom the bottom a suitable distance and smaller in diameter than the interior of the cup, said soap support being spaced a suitable distance trom the side ot the cup Whereby a ivater and brush receiving space is formed at the side of said soap support, a vertically movable soap protecting and retaining device adapted to engage the soap and soap support to hold the soap in position and to slide down on the support as the soap is Worn aivay at its upper end, said retaining device being freely removable veri tically from the soap support and the soap and its louer end extending down into the unter and brush receiving space.
