Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
. Application filed August 14, 1907. Serial No. 388,467.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL F. BAGG, a citlzen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Middlesex and State.
of Massachusetts, have invented. certain new and useful lmprovementsin Fins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to garment fasteners or pins and-spreaders adapted particularly for ladies garments, and its object is to provide an improved device'adapted'to fasten the ends or edges of collars, cuffs, shirt waists and other garments, and also to provide an improved spreader or supporter for soft or flexible collars or the like tokeep the same in position and prevent them from wrinkling. The cap of the device is adapted to receive ornamentation and may be given the appearanceof a brooch or any other style of ornamental pin desired.
fasteners showing the cap In the accompanyingdrawings illustrating certain embodiments of my invention,- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a number of pins or fasteners mounted on a common base which acts as a spreader or supporter; Fig. 2 is a side View of one of the pins or in its raised or open position; Fig. 3 illustrates the device shown in Fig. 2 with the cap in its closed position; Fig. 4 illustrates a modification in which a plurality of caps are joined together by a barhinged at one end to a body portion having a plurality'of retaining arms; Fig. 5'
is a side elevation showing the modification illustrated in Fig. 4: with the bar and caps in their closed position; and Fig. 6 is a modification showing a form of locking means between the cap and the base.
The body portion 1 maybe of metal, celluloid, rubber, bone, or other suitable material. When the bodyportion 1 carries a plurality of pins, as shown in Fig. 1, it is desirable that the same be made of celluloid, rubber or some such material which-is sufiiciently flexible to conform to the contour of the body of the wearer. If the pins are not to be mounted. on a common base to be used as a spreader but are to beused separately, the
base 1 may be made of metal and the upturned retaining arms 2 maybe made integral therewith. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, however, the base 'lis shown as formed separate from the retaining arms 2, 2, which are fastened thereto in any suitable way. Hinged to the base 1 at 18 is a link 17, at the other end of which is hinged the cap 16 wherebythe cap may be raised and the garment attached to hooks or arms 2,2, as shown in Fig. 2 and the arm 17 may be thereafter swung down until the catch 19 is caused to engage one of the arms 2, while the catch 20 at the opposite end of the cap will engage the opposite arm 2, thereby securely fastening the whole together as shown in Fig. 3 and preventing the garment from unhooking.
In the modification shown in Fig. i the retaining arms 2, 2, are formed integral with the body portion 1 and turned upwardly therefrom, and the caps 16, 16, aremounted on a bar 21 hinged at one end at point 22 to the body 1. By swinging the bar 21 downwardly the caps 15 cover the upturned retaining arms 2, thus holding in position any garment attached to the hooks 2, 2. It will be understood that the retaining arms 2, 2, may,'if desired, be blunted so as not to penetrate the fabric of the garment, in which case the fabric will be held by compression between the retaining arms and the under surfaces of the caps 16. Any suitable method of locking the caps in their closed position may be employed as, for instance, the spring prong shown midway between the arms 2, 2,
.ing the caps is shown in Fig. 6 wherein hook 23 is in theform of a pair of upturned points bent in a U-shape with a slightly contracted mouth portion for knob 24 which has a'slightly enlarged head, said knob being adapted to enter between the springs of the U-shaped member 23.
I claim:
1. A garment fastener, comprising a body portion, a cap adapted to overlie said body portion, a link hinged at one end to said body portion and at the other end to said cap, and means to hold the edges of a garment or the like between the body portion and the link, and between the cap and the link.
2. A garment fastener, comprising a body portion having a plurality of retaining arms, and a cap adapted to cover said arms, said cap and body portion having an articular connection.
A garment fastener, comprising a body portion having a plurality of retaining arms, and a cap adapted to cover said arms, said cap and body portion having an articular connection, and means to hold said cap in closed position over said arms.
4, r garment fastener, comprising a body portion having a plurality of retaining arms, a cap adapted to cover said arms, a link hinged at one end to said body portion and at its other end to said cap, and means to hold said cap in closed position over said arms.
A. garment fastener, comprising a body portion having thereon oppositely disposed retaining arms, and an elongated cap spanning the space between said arms and adapted to cover the same, said cap and body portion having an articular connection.
6. A garment fastener, comprising a body portion having thereon oppositely disposed retaining arms, an elongated cap spanning the space between said arms and adapted to cover the same, and a link hinged at one end to said body portion and at its other end to said cap.
7. A garment fastener, comprising a body portion having thereon oppositely disposed retaining arms, an elongated cap spanning the space between said arms and adapted to cover the same, a link hinged at one end to said body portion and at its other end to said cap, and means to hold said body portion, link and cap in closed position with I relation one to another. l S. A pm comprlslng .a body portlon hav arms, the arms in each pair being oppositely disposed, a cap for each pair of arms hinged to said body portion and adapted to swing over to engage and cover the ends of said arms, substantially as described.
10. A pin comprising a body portion having a plurality of pairs of pointed retaining arms, the arms in each pair being oppositely disposed, a cap for each pair of arms, a link for connecting each cap independently to said body portion, and means for attaching said cap to said arms, substantially as described,
11. it pin comprising a body portion having a plurality of pairs of pointed retaining arms, the arms in each pair being oppositely disposed, a cap for each pair of arms, a link hinged at one end to said body portion and at its outer end to said cap, and means for locking said cap to said arms, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
