Description

, inttd States @anni @19Min,
. Letters .Patent No. 91,049, dated June 8,' 1,869.
STUMP-EXTRACTOR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
f of this specification.
kFigure lfs a sectional'elevation of my invention, the section being taken through the line :iz-:c of Eg. 2.
Figure 2 isa front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of' this invention is to furnish a stumpextracting machine, which is simple in construction and eii'ective in operation.
It consists, in general terms, of a gallows-fiame, pro
vided at its upper part with a ratchet-wheel and pawllever, the shaft of the ratchet-wheel bearing a gearpinion, which engages with another gear-wheel on the winding-shaft or drum. `The stump-chain being attached to this latter shaft or drum, is wound thereon when the ratchet-lever is vibiated, and great purchase is' by this mea-ns obtained.
The gallows-frame is attached to the axle of a cart, in such a manner that it canbe tipped up in a vertical position near a stump, and again drawn forward in a horizontal position upon the axle, when it is to be transported to another stump.
The machine will be more clearly understood by ref-l erence to the drawings, in which the gallows-frame is shown, composed of the two nprights, C C, arising from the foot-timbers H H, and braced by the timbers D, and cross-timbers G E.
A are the wheels, and B, the axle of the cart, and I, the tongue. "lhe cart may be constructed in any suitable manner, and the gallows-frame may be also dierently constructed, if desired, but I have shown wbatI' deem to be the simplest and best method of constructing the same.
The axle and gallows-fi-ame are connected by two pairs of linked eye-bolts li t', and yso arranged in the braces, I), that the wheels I will be slightly raised from Athe ground when the gallows-frame is in an upright position for operation. This arrangement is to allow for the settling of the foot-timbers H in the ground, from the strain which is sustained in extracting the stump.
b is a shaft, bearing a ratchet-wheel, g.
' The saine shaft also bears apinion, 1,'which engages with theV cog-wheel J, mounted on the winding-shaft a, to which latter the stump-chain is attached.
`j' is asocket or box, working on the shaft I1, and contains a hook-pawl, which engages the teeth of the ratchet-wheel g, when the lever is vibrated downwards.`- s /c l h is a pawl arranged -to hold the ratchet from turning backward while "the lever is being raised. The bearings for the shafts a and 11 are afforded bythe gallows-frame in any suitable mannner. y
The outline of the machine, in blue color, in fig, lI, illustrates the position of the galloWs-frame and wheels when the machine is being backed up to a stump, or is being drawn forward to another place.
I desire it to be understood as not limiting my invention to the precise arrangement of shafts and gearing, or to the number of such shafts and gear-wheels, as it may be found expedient inpractice to interpose one or more additional wheels'between the two herein shown, in order to obtain greater purchase for extract-y ing very large stumps. The number shown, however, is, if properly proportioned, snicient to enable a single attendant to extract the stumps ordinarily found in practice.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'lhe arrangement upon the stump-extractor frame, attached to the wagon-wheels, of the winding-shaft a, wheel J, pinion l, ratchet-wheel g, and pawl h, the lever and the hook-pawl f e, as herein set forth and shown, for the purpose specified.
` WILLIAM SMITH.
