REAR SIGHT FOR SHOTGUNS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
Application filed February 14, 1908. Serial No. 415,941.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC N. LAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flasher, in the county of Morton, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rear Sights for Shotguns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rear sights for shotguns.
Such sights as are now used upon shotguns are provided with but a single sight notch and in shooting game, and particularly wild ducks on the wing, where it is absolutely necessary to aim at a point in advance of the to the discretion of the gunner. The location of this point, so to speak, varies in ratio to the distance the objective is from the gunner and consequently it is necessary, in order to make a successful shot under such conditions, to be an expert marksman.
The object of my invention is to provide a sight of such construction that it may be applied to any shotgun now in use and which w' enable the gunner to fire exactly the proper distance in advance of the game although aiming directly at it.
The means by which I arrive at the advantageous result will be apparent from the drawings, the specific descri tion which is to follow and the appended dlaims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the sight embodied in my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough taken from front to rear, and, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the said sight.
In the figures of the drawings, there is shown a sight comprising a dove-tailed base 17 upon which is formed an n standing flange including a section 18 which extends transversely of the base and right angularly extended end sections 19 which extend in a downward direction. At the upper end, the transversely extending section 18 of the flange is formed with a plurality of teeth 20, and formed upon the upper face of the base 17, directly in advance of the section 18 of the flange is an upstanding guide rib 21 between which and the said section 18 of the block is a sight leaf 22, the said leaf being formed at its ends with forwardly projecting ears 23. Set screws 2 1 are engaged through the right angularly extended end sections 19 of the first described flange and these set screws abut the said ears 23, it being understood that by turning the screws, the sight leaf may be adjusted longitudinally of the first described flange. It will be understood, of course, that the leaf upon the flange and upon the sight leaf cooperate to form spaced notches and it will further be understood that by adjusting the sight leaf in the manner stated, the distance between the notches will be varied as also their depth, it being also understood that this adjustment is had for the purpose of adapting the firearm for use in hunting game which travel at different speeds. For example, in hunting ducks which, as it is very well known, fly at a high rate of speed, the sight leaf is adjusted so as to lessen the depth of the notches formed by the cooperation of its teeth with the teeth upon the said flange. This adjusment not only serves to lessen the depth of the sight notches and consequently adapt the sight for long range, but the distance between the said notches is increased so that a gun will be pointed or directed at an objective point further in advance of the game than the said point would be under other conditions.
What is claimed, is
1. A sight for fire arms comprising a base, an upstanding flange formed upon the base and including right angularly turned end portions, the upper edge of the body of the flange being formed with teeth and resultant notches, and a sight leaf adjustably held against the said body of the flange and formed also with teeth and resultant notches which cooperate with the teeth and notches first mentioned.
2. A sight for fire arms comprising a base, an upstanding flange formed upon the base and formed at its upper edge with a plurality of sight notches, and a sight leaf disposed against the said flange and adjustable longitudinally thereof the said sight leaf being formed at its upper edge also with a plurality of notches which cooperate with the notches at the upper edge of the flange.
3. A sight for fire arms comprisinga base, a flange formed upon the base and projecting upwardly therefrom, the said flange being formed at its upper edge with sight notches, a guide leaf formed upon the base and extending in spaced parallel relation with respect to the said flange, and a sight leaf enand the said guide leaf and formed also with 15 a plurality of notches, the said sight leaf being formed at its ends with right angularly F turned ears, and set screws engaged through the right angularly turned end portions of the flange and with the ears at the end of the sight leaf whereby the said leaf may be adjusted with respect to the flange.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature,
