RAILWAY-TIE BEMOVER.
Application filed October 3, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. Bron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Magnolia, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Tie Removers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention is a device for removing railway cross ties from beneath track rails without disturbing the latter or the road bed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which will be convenient and effective in operation.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through a track showing the application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, the removable handle section of the operating lever being omitted; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the tie engaging rod; Fig. 4 is a perspective of the base or body member of the rail clamp; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the cam lever for said clamp; Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the operating lever and the intermittent rod gripping device; Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 77 in Fig. 6 and showing the jaws of the gripping device in their inoperative position; and Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 showing the gripping jaws in an operative position.
In the drawings R denotes track rails, T the cross ties and 1 denotes the improved tie remover. This device consists of a member 2 to engage the tie, a clamp or attaching member 3 to engage the rail, an operating lever at carried by the clamp or member 3, and an intermittent gripping device 5 carried by the lever and engaged with the memher 2. The latter is here shown in the form of a rod adapted to be arranged alongside of the tie and having one end tapered, as shown at 6, to readily enter the device 5 and its other end bent at right angles to provide an arm 7, which engages the end of the tie and which has a right angularly bent end Specification of Letters Patent.

The attaching member 3 is preferably in the form of a clamp adapted to engage one of the rails at a point to one side of the tie to be removed, and it comprises a base plate 1 bent or folded upon itself at one end, as shown at 10, said folded portion being secured by rivets 11 and having their inner eX- tremities bent to form stationary jaws 12 which engage one of the base flanges of the rail. Said folded portion 10 of the base plate has its central portion cut away to provide an opening 13 for the reception of the lever 4, which latter is fulcrumed upon a pivot pin 14: arranged in bearing eyes 15 formed in the outer extremities of the folded portion 10 of the base plate, as clearly shown in Fig. 4E. The portion of the base plate 9 which is removed to provide the opening 13 is bent inwardly, as shown at 16, to fill the space between the rail engaging stationary aws12 of the clamp. The base plate 9 is adapted to extend under the base flanges of the rail and pivoted upon its projecting inner end is a lever 17 provided with a cam or eccentric portion 18 which serves as the movable jaw of the clamp. Said lever is fulcrumed at 19 upon the top of the base plate and its cam or eccentric portion 18 is adapted to engage the edge of the base flange of the track rail and is formed with an extended flange 20 which rests upon the top of said base flange of the rail, shown n ore clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. This construction, it will be noted, permits the de vice to be quickly and easily applied to or removed from a track rail.
The operating lever a has a lower section 21 fulcrumed intermediate its ends upon the pivot 14: and provided at its lower end with a forked portion between the arms 22 of which is mounted the intermittent rod gripping device 5. Said lower section of the lever a is preferably made of two metal straps, as more clearly shown in Fig. 6 and upon its upper end is removably mounted a handle section 23. The latter has in its lower end a socket to receive the upper end of the lever section 21. The lower lever section 21 does not project above the plane of the tread surfaces of the track rails when the device is in position upon the track and the upper section 23 is made removable so that it can be quickly removed upon the approach of a train. This construction, therefore, obviates the necessity of removing the device from the track upon the approach of a train. The lower lever section 21 is preferably formed with a longitudinal series of openings 24 any one of which may receive the pivot 14; so that the fulcrum of the lever may be varied.
The intermittent gripping device 5 consists of two gripping jaws 25 in the form of blocks arranged in longitudinal alinement with each other and having their outer ends loosely fulcrumed by screws or headed pivot pins 26 in the arms 22 of the forked lower end of the operating lever. The opposing inner ends of said jaw blocks are formed with grooves or recesses 27 to receive the tie engaging rod or member 2, and the intermediate portions of said jaw blocks are fulcrumed upon vertical pivots 28 arranged in plates 29 arranged above and'below the jaw blocks. Said plates serve to unite the latter and they are formed upon one side with projecting portions or flanges 30 which serve as stops to limit the swinging movement of the jaw blocks upon their pivots 28 in one direction. It will be seen upon reference to Fig. 7 that when the jaw blocks arein longitudinal alinement with each other and engaged with the stops 30 the rod 2 may be readily moved between them and through their opposing grooves 27, but the instant the lever 4 is shifted in one direction the jaw blocks swing upon their pivots 28 to their angular position shown in Fig. 8 so that their inner ends tightly bind the rod 2 and lock the latter to the lever. It will be seen, therefore, that when the lever is moved in one direction the jaw blockswill release the rod and slide longitudinally upon the same, and when said lever is moved in the opposite direction said aw blocks will grip the rod and cause it to move with the lever.
In operation, assuming the device to be in position upon the rail and tie, as shown in Figs. 1. and 2 of the drawings, when the handle section 23 of the lever is swung outwardly the jaw blocks will release the rod 2 and slide inwardly upon the same and when said end of the lever is swung inwardly the jaw blocks will lock the rod to the lever and said rod, and consequently the tie, will be moved outwardly from beneath the rails. In using the device it is'only necessary to remove a little earth from around one end of the tie and to apply the device to the tie and rail. The use of the device, therefore, dispenses with the necessity of disturbing the road bed or loosening or lifting the track rails. V
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. A device of the character described comprising a stationary fulcrum, a lever upon the latter, means to engage a tie, and an intermittent grip device carried by the lever and engaged with said tie engaging means.
2. A device of the character described comprising an attaching means, a lever fulcrumed therein, a tie engaging rod and an intermittent gripping device upon the lever and adapted to receive said rod.
A device of the character described comprising a track rail engaging clamp, a lever fulcrum therein, a tie engaging rod and an intermittent gripping device carried by the lever and adapted to receive said rod.
4. A device of the character described comprising an attaching member having leans to engage a track rail, a lever fulcrumed upon said member, a tie engaging rod, and an intermittent grip device upon the lever for engagement with said rod.
5. A device of the character described comprising an attaching member for engagement with a track rail, a lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends upon said member, a' removable handle section upon the upper end of the lever, a tie engaging rod and an intermittent grip device upon the lower end of the lever and adapted to receive said rod.
6. A device oft the character described comprising a support, a lever fulcrumed upon the same and having spacedarms, jaw blocks loosely pivoted at their outer ends to said arms, a connecting member between said aw blocks and having fulcrums arranged intermediate the ends of said aw blocks, said connecting member also having a centrally arranged stop to limit the swinging movement of the jaw blocks in one direction, and a tie engaging rod adapted to pass between the inner end of the jaw blocks an to be gripped by the latter.
