RAILROAD-CROSSING.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALBERT E. KALT- SCHMIDT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Detroit, in the county of W ayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Crossings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to railway crossings and especially to means for temporarily filling the rails of either track to form a continuous tread.
The invention consists in the matters here inafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a standard crossing equipped with a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in detail of a filler block operating mechanism with casing cover removed, showing the block in position, when filling or closing a track. Fig. 3 is a View in vertical, central section of the mechanism. Fig. 4 is a view in vertical central section taken at right angles to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view in horizontal section on line 9cr of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate respectively the main line rails of intersecting tracks, with reinforcing rails 3, guard rails 4i and plates 5 all constructed and arranged in the usual manner. Connections 6 which are of the standard type used in signal and interlocking switch tower systems, and run from an operators station or a switch stand to the crossing are coupled to a set of rack arms 7 which are each slidable in a casing or boX 8 suitably secured as by flanges 9 bolted to the track in an angle or corner of the crossing, whereby a set of fillers 10 on lifting arms 11 which are adapted to close the gaps in the rails of the cross-track 2 when in place, is swung in or out of position through mechanism in the casing operated by the rack arms. Similarly, other connections 12 oper ate a second set of fillers 13 for the track 1. The ratchet or rack arm 7 is reciprocable in a base plate 15 closing the casing, and meshes with a pinion 16 fixed on the lower end of an upright cam cylinder 17 rotatably secured in the casing as by a stud 18.

in operation, a single complete movement of the rack arm in either direction gives a single revolution to the cam cylinder. The lock plunger cam and lifting cam are so disposed relatively to each other that the plunger is withdrawn from the shaft and the latter is then raised by its cam yoke until the filler block is clear of the crossing rails. The cylinder gear and shaft pinion then intermesh and give the shaft a half turn, swinging the filler to the rear of the casing. The gear and pinion then clear themselves, the shaft cam yoke roller lowers the shaft as it runs down the cylinder cam path, and the lock plunger is shot home. if the filler block has been damaged so as not to properly en age the check loch rock shaft, the check lock Ward is snapped into the notch of the cam cylinder which is so placed that the cylinder is thus arrested before the operators lever has reached its throw out position, thusv back to place. Either track may thus be cleared and a substantially continuous tread be presented by throwing the actuating lever.
The operating parts are incased and are adapted to stand rough usage, and'once adjusted are not liable to disarrangement and cannot be tampered with.
Obviously details of construction may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not care to limit my self to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
l'l hat I claim as my invention is 1 In a railway crossing, a vertical shaft, a lifting arm extending radially therefrom, a filler block on the arm, means adapted to raise and lower the shaft and rotate it when elevated, and means to lock the shaft against movement when in its lower position, controlled by the operating means.
2. in a railway crossing, a casing, a vertical rotatable shaft longitudinally movable in the casing, a rotatable operating member in the casing adapted to raise and lower the shaft and to give it a half turn when elevated, a longitudinally reciprocable member adapted to rotate the operating member, a radial lifting arm secured to the shaft, and a filler block secured on the filler arm.
3. In a railway crossing, a casing, a vertical rotatable shaft longitudinally movable in the casing, a cam yoke on the shaft, a cylinder j ournaled in the casing parallel to the shaft provided. with a path engaging the yoke, a mangled pinion non-rotatably and slidably secured on the shaft, a mangled gear on the cylinder adapted to intermittently engage the pinion, a rack inion secured on the cylinder, a rack bar ongitndinally movable in the casing in mesh with the rack pinion, a radial lifting arm secured. to the shaft and a filler block secured to the arm.

In a railway crossing, a casing, a mangled pinion journaled in the casing, a shaft having non-rotative, sliding engagement with the pinion, a lifting arm extending from the shaft, a filler block thereon, a plunger adapted to lock the shaft in its lower position, a cylinder ournaled in the casing parallel to the shaft, a cam yoke on the shaft, a cam on the cylinder engaged by the yoke and adapted to lift the shaft, a mangled gear on the cylinder adapted to engage androtate the shaft pinion when the shaft is raised, a cam on the cylinder adapted to throw the plunger into engagement with the shaft when the latter is lowered, a check lock shaft journaled in the casing transversely to the cylinder, a ward plate thereonadapted to lock the cylinder when depressed, a spring adapted to depress the ward, a rock arm on the shaft exterior to the casing adapted to be intercepted by the filler block when the latter is retracted norm-all a inion secured to the cylinder, and a rack bar ongitudinally movable in the casing in mesh with the pinion.
