A TTOHNE Y GEORGES GAUTHIER, or MARSEILLE, FRANCE."
APPARATUS FOR DISINFEOTIQN AND TEE EXTERMINATION OI VERHIN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoRcEs GAUTHIER,
a citizen of the Re ublic of France, residingin Marseille, in sai Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Disinfection and the Extermination of Vermin, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a portable apparatus by means of which disinfecting and vermin-exterminating gases may be readily generated and supplied to rooms or apartments from the exterior of the building, whereby such rooms or apartments may be disinfected or have the vermin therein exterminated, or said operations may take place successively. To this end, the a paratus is mounted on a vehicle which-may he self-propelled, or otherwise, and comprises improved means whereby the necessary gases may be .D readily generated and supplied to the place to be treated.
In the accompanying drawin s, in which similar reference characters in icate corresponding parts throughout the views, Figure 1 is a plan-view of the a paratus,Fig. 2 is a front-view, Figs. 3 an 4 are side-views taken on opposite sides, andFig. 5 is a'vertical section of the furnace in which the gases.
are generated. I I 7 As shown in the drawings, the a paratus is mounted upon a platform provi ed with wheels and the necessary running gear. The particular form of running gear is unessen tial, and the wheels are merely indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4.
Mounted u on the platform of the vehicle is a metallic urnace A which is made intwo superposed parts, the lower part R bein provided with burners 1' which are supplie with liquid fuel from a tank L in which said fuel is contained,- and which is mounted upon the platform and connected with the burners by a suitable pipe, as shown. In the upper part of the furnace there is provided a pan J which receives through a port P the" fluids for' generating the deodorizlng as. Mounted below said pan, within the urnace, is an alcohol-burner K, in the form of a ot, by which said pan is heated and the fluid vapo rized. The burner or pot K is sup orted on a suitable support k on a horizonta plate It beneath which the burners r are arranged.
The furnace A communicates at its upper part, by means of a pipe, with a filtering-box C by which the generated gases are purified,

after which they are cooled by pass' into a metallic tank B arran ed on the atform ad'acent the furnace. n the tank is ed with water, there is placed a refrigerating-coil of any approved construction.
' 0 denotes the water-pump.
D denotes an exhaust fan, which is con nected with the tank B in such away as to draw ofi the gases therefrom, said fan being driven by a motor E arranged at the front.
of the platform and connected with the fan by a beltor other transmission mechanism.
Said .motor may in practice be used as the motor fordriving the vehicle. The motor is cooled by means of a cooling device F arranged on the'platform between the motor E and the exhaust fan and communicating with the refrigerating-tank B; M denotes I The fan is connected by means of a plurality of pipes H with the rooms to be, treated, the gases being forced through the 1pipes and sucked back from the rooms into t e furnace A by means of a pipe G entering the furnace at its lower part and provided with nozzles, as shown, for connection with the returnpi es. I is the aspiration-pipe connected with the fan D whereby the gaseous mix tur's fromthe rooms under treatment are returned to the atmosphere when the process isended. 7 w,
When the apparatus is to be used for the exterminationof vermin, there is placed on the horizontal plate h of the furnace A a mixture of sulfur and charcoal. The burners r in the part B of the furnace are then ignited, whereby a deadly gas is generated. The motor is then started and this sets in motion the fan D which sucks the gas from the furnace A into the filter, which cleanses the same, and from the filter the gas is sucked into the refrigerating-tank B, which has a cooling action thereon. From said tank the gas is sucked through the fan D which forces 1t through the pipes H into the rooms or a artments to be treated. The suction of which t e fan causes the air and gas in the rooms to be sucked back into the furnace through the ipes which are connected to the nozzles of t e pipe G connected with the lower part of the furnace. Thus the fan causes a continuous circulation of the gas to be produced. Instead of charcoal and sulfur, other substances may be used to generate the deadly vermin-exterminating gas.
When using the apparatus for deodorization or disinfection, the alcohol-burner K is filled with alcohol and the liquids to be vaporized are poured into the pan J by means of the port P. When the alcohol-burner is 5 ignited the disinfecting gas is generated and circulates in the manner above described.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
10 An apparatus for disinfection and the exterminatlon of vermin, comprising a furnace having an interior horizontal plate on which substances forming a deadly gas may be burned, burners beneath said plate for heat- 15 ing such substances, a pan in the upper part of the furnace to hold a liquid to be vaporized, a burner above the horizontal plate for heating said pan, an exhaust fan, and a connection between said fan and the upper part of said furnace whereby the disinfecting gas or the vermin-exterminating gas generated therein isforced into the rooms to be treated. v
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, presence of two subscribing witnesses.
