UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SLEMIN, JR., OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO YAWMAN & ERBE MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
PAPER-FILE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1908.
Be it known that 1, CHARLES SLEMIN, Jr., of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to improvements in devices for filing letters, bills and other papers in such a manner that they may be readily and conveniently examined at any time, and it is the object of my present invention to provide an improved device that enables the drawers or other receptacles containing the papers to be withdrawn from their cabinet or holder and suspended therefrom in a tilted or inclined position to enable the papers to be inspected, an upward motion of the drawer serving to disengage the members of the supporting device and thereby permit the drawer to be entirely removed from its cabinet.
To these and other ends my invention relates to certain features of construction that will be hereinafter more fully explained and pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view through a cabinet, and the drawers contained therein, to which my improvements have been applied: Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a drawer removed from the cabinet, showing one of the supporting members attached thereto; and Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the position of the drawer within its cabinet.
The same numerals of reference designate similar parts in the several views.
I have shown my present invention as applied to an ordinary filing cabinet wherein the drawers are adapted to be drawn out forwardly until they reach the limit of their motion, and they are then released to permit them to assume a tilted or inclined position, and in the resent embodiment, the cabinet may inclu e any number of receptacles 1 that are adapted to receive the drawers 2, the latter in this instance embodying the base board 3 rovided at its forward and rear edges wit the end pieces 4 and 5 respectively, and at its lateral edge with the side board 6, the opposite lateral edge of the drawer being left open, the follower 7 being employed having its respective ends journaled in the end pieces 4 and 5 at points adjacent the side board 6 for retaining the papers in their proper position within the drawer. Upon the rear end piece 4, preferably adjacent the open side of the drawer, I provide a supporting member 8 preferably formed from sheet material and embodying a flat securing plate that may be screwed or otherwise fastened to the drawer, and which is provided with a lateral extension or finger 9 which is turned rearwardly substantially at right angles to the plane of the fastening plate and extends upwardly at an oblique angle to the rear of the drawer. Within each of the drawer receptacles are provided the supporting plates 10, each of which preferably embodies a fiat plate, having the offset attaching ends 11, which are suitably secured to the lateral wall of the receptacle in proximity to the forward opening therein, and are preferably disposed obliquely or angularly across the path of the supporting finger 9 of the drawer. Thus it will be seen that as each drawer is withdrawn from the cabinet, the supporting finger 9 thereon will engage the supporting plate 10 which lies in its path as it moves forwardly, thereby arresting the further motion of the drawer in a forward direction, and as the attendant releases his grasp upon the handle 12, the forward portion of the drawer will tilt downwardly, causing the drawer to assume a position similar to that shown by the lower drawer in Fig. 1. In assuming this position, the supporting finger 9 of the drawer will take up a position between the supporting plate 10 of the cabinet and the lateral wall thereof, thereby constituting a firm support that will effectually sustain the drawer in a tilted or inclined position. However, whenever it may be found desirable to entirely remove the drawer from its cabinet to enable the papers therein to be removed or otherwise handled, the drawer is drawn forwardly, in the usual manner, but when it approaches its limit of motion, the forward end thereof is tilted upwardly, causing the upper end of the su porting finger 9 of the drawer to pass beneat 1 and thus clear the supporting plate 10, and in this manner the drawer may be completely removed.
A device of this character may be readily and conveniently applied to various forms of drawers or similar devices wherein it is desirable to secure a tilting motion of the character herein described, and as it is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction and simple in operation, the utility of the device will be readily apparent, it being understood that while such an improvement is particularly useful when applied to a drawer or receptacle wherein the papers are so placed that they may be turned over during inspection like the Leaves of a book, still the same may be advantageously applied to various other types of drawers or paper receptacles with equally good results.
i claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a suitable cabinet having a drawer receptacle therein, and a drawer adapted to operate in the receptacle, of a supporting member arranged on the side of the cabinet above the bottom of the drawer receptacle and a supporting member arranged on the rear of the drawer and adapted to engage with the supporting member of the cabinet by a forward movement only of the drawer to prevent the complete withdrawal of the latter, said supporting members being so constructed and arranged that when engaged the drawer may drop to and be held in a downwardly tilted position or may be raised at its front to permit the supporting member on the drawer to pass below that on the cabinet.
2. The combination with a suitable cabinet having a drawer receptacle, and a drawer adapted to operate in said receptacle, of a supporting member secured to the drawer receptacle of the cabinet above the bottom thereof, and a supporting member secured to the rear of the drawer having an upwardly extending finger arranged to automatically engage with the supporting member of the cabinet by a forward movement only of the drawer, to support the drawer in a tilted position when the drawer drops downwardly at its forward end and to pass below the supporting member on the cabinet when the drawer is tilted upwardly at its forward end.
3. The combination with a cabinet having a drawer receptacle and a drawer adapted to operate in said receptacle, of a member carried by the drawer and a member in the receptacle engaged by the member on the drawer upon a forward movement only of the latter and constructed to permit the drawer to move to a downwardly tilted position when the members are engaged and to permit the member on the drawer to pass beneath it when the drawer is tilted upwardly at its forward end.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with the cabinet or holder, having drawer-receptacles therein and a plate arranged angularly upon the vertical wall of the receptacle having an offset attaching portion, of a drawer or file slidingly mounted in the receptacle of the cabinet, and a plate secured to the rear portion thereof and provided with a rearwardly and upwardly extending projection, arranged to engage the offset portion of the angularly arranged plate in the receptacle and retain the drawer in an inclined or tilted position when withdrawn from the cabinet.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with the cabinet having a drawer receptacle, and a laterally projecting plate arranged obliquely upwardly and rearwardly upon one of the side walls of the receptacle, of a drawer slidingly mounted in the receptacle, and a plate secured to the rear portion thereof having a portion extending rearwardly and vertically therefrom and adapted to cooperate with the laterally projecting plate of the receptacle to arrest the forward motion of the drawer and to support the latter in a relatively inclined position.
6. The combination with a cabinet having a drawer receptacle, and a drawer adapted to operate in said receptacle, of a supporting member carried by the cabinet above the bottom of the drawer receptacle, and a supporting member carried by the drawer and arranged to engage the member on the cabinet on an outwardly sliding movement only, said drawer-carried member being formed to slide on the cabinet-carried member to permit the drawer to drop at its forward end, and being adapted to pass beneath the cabinet-carried member when the drawer is tilted upwardly at its forward end.
