IMPRovED BATH-BRUSH.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that 1,"JOSEPH MARSHALL, of New York city, in, the county and State of New York,

have invented a new and. useful Improvement in Combination-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, which 'will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to anew and useful improvement in brushes for vcleaning-purposes, more especially designed for flesh-brushes, but applicable to other uses; and consists in thecombination oi' bristles or hair, or their equivalents, with sponge, in the manner hereinafter described..

The accompanying drawing represents a longitudinal vertical section of a brush, constructed according to my invention.

A is thev handle.

B is the part to which the bristles C are attached.

D represents the sponge.

E is a piece to which the sponge is attached in any suitable manner. The sponge may be attached to the piece B, and both the sponge and the bristles, or hair, 0, may be attached directly to the top 0r handle-piece, A, if found more advisable todo so.

In this example of my invention, the sponge, in a singley piece, occupies a central position; but I do not confine myself to that, or any other particular arrangement, my invention being, combining sponge with .the bristles, or hair, of a brush.

The advantages of' this arrangement are that in cleansing the skin, the sponge will retain the water or suds, while the bristles or hair will give the necessary friction for cleansing the skin.

For cleansing clothes, and for other purposes, the same advantages are secured.

The method of attaching the parts together is seen in the drawing, screws beingused for that purpose; but water-proof cement may be employed in whole or in part, if deemed advisable.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The use of sponge, in combination with bristles or hair, or the equivalents of bristles or hair, in the construction of brushes, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
