FRANKLIN MOORE AND EDWARD CLARK, OF 'SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 90,602, dated May 25, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FCR POINTING- BOLTS OR RIVETS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent making part of the same;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN STACKER, of West Wint sted, in the county of Litchfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements' in Bolt-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to an improved method of pointing bolts, and consists in constructing the end of the gauge-rod of such shape that the end of the bolt' is made of any desired form, by the operation of the hammer, as will be fully described hereinafter.
Figure l represents a plan view.
Figure 2, a sectional elevation through the line x z, fig. 1, of my improved machine.
Figure 3, a detached view of the gauge-rod and bolt.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Irwill proceed to describe its construction and operation.
B represents the anvil-block, resting upon the base A, which is constructed in the usual manner.
O represents a standard, by means of which the gauge-rod D is supported, the latter being lixed in a given position by means of the set-screw c.
E represents the hammer, which is operated in they nsual manner.
The end of gauge-rod D, which rests upon the anvil-block, is provided with a projection or socket, as may be desired, by means of which the end of the bolt is formed..
If a. pointed bolt is to be formed, the gauge-rod has a projection upon one side, as is shown in iig. 3. 1t will be readily seen, that by varying the end of the gauge-rod, various forms may be easily produced, as convex, concave, or pointed.
The operation is as follows:
The rod of iron to be formed into a bolt is placed in the groove beneath the hammer, and given a re volving motion. By the operation of the hammer, it is quickly brought to the desired shape. As the round form of the bolt proper is formed by the groove in the block, and by the operation of the hammer, so the `point of the bolt is formed by the operation of the hammer in connection with the gauge-rod.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The gauge-rod D, constructed as described, when combined with the hammer E and anvil-block B, in the manner and for the purpose described.
This specification signed and witnessed, this 22d day of February, 1869.
' JOHN STAOKER.
