Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application filed October 25, 1907. Serial No. 399,200. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JULrUs JOSEPH DRAWE and WALTER J osnrn TURNBULL, citizens of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in beds, and is primarily designed to provide a bedstead of metal or other suitable material, which may be utilizable either with a box s ring for supporting the mattress or with t e usual or rigid bed slats as said mattress su port.
roadly, the invention consists in providing reversible rails associated with mechanism for formin an interlock between the bed posts and t e ends of said rails, one operating face of said rails being adapted to form a horizontal support for the frame of the box spring, andthe inside of said rails being adapted to receive the usual form of wooden slats.
Other objects and advantages and the details of construction will appear in the following description, the distinctive features of the inventlon being more succinctly set forth in the claims.
While the invention is not restricted to the exact details shown and described, still for the purpose of .disclosure reference is had to the accompanying drawings illustrating a practical embodiment of the same, in which ike letters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead with our invention applied thereto, and showin the hollow or inside portion of the reversible rails in position to receive the rigid slats. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged view showing one of the reversible rails fitted in osition, and showing another reversible rai removed to illustrate the manner of securing the rails to the corner post. Fig. 3 is a horizontal central section through the corper post and a pair of the reversible rails attached thereto, and showing the endof one of the rigid slats in position. mentary sectional view showing the method of securing the slats to the bed rail. Fig. 5
Fig. 4 is a flag is a view looking inwardly towards one of the corner posts in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fi 3 with the bed rails detached. Fig. 6 is aTocal sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 5, and looking upwardly in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 7 is an interior elevation of one of the reversible rails, the rail being broken away for simplicity of illustration. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view in side elevation showing a bracket or brace in- .terposed between the bed post and the rail to insure greater rigidity to the parts, a portion of the bed post and bracket being broken away to show the means of connecting them together, and Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but with the bed rails attached to the corner lock in a reverse position to that previously shown, and forming a support for a box spring.
In carrying out the invention there is first provided What may be termed a corner lock. Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 6, this corner lock consists in a body portion 1, supported by a bed post 2, which latter may form an integral part of said body portion, or may be separable therefrom. This body portion is provided with two inside faces disposed at right angles to each other, and these inside faces are recessed, and projecting therefrom are tongues 3 and 41, which may form an integral part of the body portion, or may be otherwise secured therein. These tongues 3 and 4, at their base, areof smaller dimensions than the spaces between the walls of said recessed faces, and form with said walls the upper and lower horizontal recesses 5 and 6 and the vertical recess 7, the position where the upper and lower horizontal recesses come together being illustrated by the edge 8, more clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The projecting ends of the tongues, which are disposed at ri ht angles to each other, are provided with tlie transverse holes 9, and the vertically-projecting pins 10, the object of which holes and pins will later be referred to.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 7, there is shown hollow rails, which may be termed reversible rails for convenience. These rails consist of two sides disposed at right angles to each other, forming a hollow internal support when disposed in the position shown in these figures, 11 in these views showing the lower horizontal wall, and 12 the vertical outside wall. These rails may cured to the bed rails by a be provided adjacent their ends with the partitions 13, forming a housing for the reception of the tongues of the corner looks. The walls 11 of the rails may also be provided with a plurality of apertures shown at.
apertures 8 in the wall 11.
In Fig.8 there is illustrated a suitable bracket or brace to assist in making the parts more rigid, and this bracketmay .consist in the angularly-disposed arms 19 sepin 20, and providedat their ends with pintles 21 fitting in the sockets 22formed in the bed post.
In Fig. 9 the bed rails are shown in their reverse position, the walls 11 of said rails being then disposed in'vertical planes, with the walls 12 in horizontal planes, and the latter walls forming a support for a boX spring, the bed slats being then dispensed with.
Various means may be employedlfor interlocking the reversible rails with the-corner lock, and for the purpose of illustration several -may be referred to. For instance, as shown in Fig. 1, andon one tongue 1n Fig. 2, the ends of the rails are secured to the corner lock by means of a headed bolt 23 passing through the aperture 17 in the rail, and the hole 9 in the tongue, the
threaded end of the bolt beingprovided with a nut 24. If the bolts are objectionable, pins maysimply be used in their place. If either of these fastening means is not desirable, the reversible rails may be provided with the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, wherein 25 designates a spring member secured atone end,'as at 26, to the rail, and provided at its other end with-a pin 27 pass- :ing *through the aperture 17 andinto the hole 9, the pin 27 in this case taking the place of the bolt 23 or its equivalent pin. In all of these constructions, the vertical pins 10 may be used or not, as desired, although they form a more rigid connection between the parts. WVhen used, and when the rail is inthe position shown in Figs. 1 to 7, the downwardly-projecting pin 10 fits in the hole 18, while in the reverse position shown in Fig. 9, theupper pin 10 fits in the hole 18 at the other-end of the rail. In
' assembling the parts into position. for use with 'bedslats, the end edges of the walls 11 .and
12 are fitted in the horizontal and vertical slots 6 and 7, respectively, and the -rails 'secured tothe tongues 3iand 4,1as previously described. 'When, however, the rails .;are reversed for use with a box spring, the end end edges thereof are'inserted in substantially as described.
having transverse a edges of the walls 11 and 12 are similarly inserted in the slots 5 and 7, respectively, and the parts secured as heretofore described.
What we claim is 1. In a bed, the combination with a plurality of corner locks, comprising a body portion having inwardly-disposed faces at right angles to each other with tongues projectlng from said faces, each face of said body portion being provided with a pair of horizontal recesses and a vertical recess disposed around the base ofsaid tongues, a plurality of reversible rails comprising walls disposed at right an les to each other, the endedgesof said wal s being adapted to .fit in said horizontal and vertical recesses, and'means for securingsaid rails to said tongues when the said slots,
2. Ina bed the combination of a plurality of corner locks comprising a body portion and a pair of tongues disposed inwardly at rightanglesto said body portion, a plurality of rails, means for detachably securing said rails to said body portion, means for detach- .ably securing said .rails to said projecting tongues in reversed .positions andindependent means for connecting said rails with said corner osts, substantially as described.
3. T e combination of a plurality of bed posts and cornerlocks carried thereby, a plurality of reversible rails, means for securing said reversible rails in either of their reversible positions to said corner locks, and independent means for connecting said rails with said corner posts, comprising angularly-disposed arms carried by said railsand projecting above and below said corner locks, and provided at their projecting ends Withpintles operating in sockets cutinto said'posts,
substantially as described.
