BENJAMIN S. LAWSON, OI" NEW YORK, N. Y.
Lette/rs Patent No. 90,563, dated Ma/y 25, 1869.
IMPRovnn vELocIPEDn The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of 'che name.
To all whom it may concern:
Ihad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of my device.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
My invention relates to velocipedes; and it consists mainly in a scat-spring of novel construction, upon which the seat is made adjustable in a novel manner.
The letter A of the drawings represents the front wheel of myV velocipede, and
The letter B is the rear wheel thereof.
The letters C are cranks connected with the rear wheel in the manner shown, and
'Ihe letters D are horizontal rods connecting, the cranks C with the cranks E, next mentioned.
The letters E represent cranks, connected with the guiding-standard ailixed to the front wheel, as shown, and with the rods D, as above stated.
The pedals of my velocipede are represented by the letter G. They are oval in form, and thereby adapted to the hollow of the foot.
The wheels of my veloeipede have grooved peripheries, as shown at H on g. l. p
My seat spring is shown by the letter I on fig. 2,
and the mode of its attachment to the velocipede is also thereon represented. A
The letters a and-c are hinges connected with said -sprin g.
-My seat is shown by the letter K, the bottom of which has a 'wedged form, as shown at s, and itis held upon the spring by means ofthe band n. The wedgeform of' the bottom of the seat resting upon the spring enables the operator to adjust it upon the spring at any desired point with great ease.
V The letter'L represents the guiding-bar.
It will be observed that the pedals of my velocipede Work Aabove the forward hwheel, and are thereby placedv beyond any point of contact therewith.
It will also be observed, that owing to the peculiar arrangement of my seat, the spring or restthereof is out of the way of the operators feet, rendering it practicable for a lady to propel the velocipede without sitting -astride of any beam or rod.l
In testimony that I claim the abo've, I have herel unto subscribed luy-name, in the presence of two Witnesses.
BENJAMIN S. LAWSON. Witnesses:
JAMES P. Gnnvns, J. M. I-IYNE.
