To all "whom it may; concern Be it known that. .l, GARRY J. Domtlinny, a citizen of the United States, residing in Troy,- county of Rensselaer, and State of blew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Folding-Machines, of which the following a specification.
My invention relates to machines for infolding or inturning the edges of blanks for cufi's, collars or like articles; and more particularly to mechanisms and parts for cil'octing the folding and pressing of the folds of blanks intended to make up the "two parts of a. coil or analogous a rtiele preparatory to sewing such parts together.

I will first describe a folding machine embodying my invention. and then point out the novel features in the claims.

In general the machine of the present application may be said to contemplate a bed which is designated by the character A, which serves as a support for the blanks during the folding and preming operations hereinafter to be described; and in combination therewith suitable infolding instrumentalitics or in'l olders; also a member for defining the folds to be produced upon the blanks upon the bed of the machine during the infolding operation; also a treudle or analogous pressure applying means by which a suitably powerful pressure such as has heretofore been found necessary to produce an eflicicnt creasing oi the folds, may be brought about. The machine illustrated also discloses means for heating the bed in a manner which is well known and has been found desirable, if not practically necessary, for the unmut'acture of blanks for all kinds of culls, collars and analogous articles. Such heating means in the present machine is provided in the hollow portion or chamber indicated at B in the bed of the machine directly beneath its middle portion, or the portion upon which the infolding of the blank is carried on. A convenient means of heating the bed is by supplying steam to the chamber 13, but. other means are equally available, such as the use of gas jets.
l have illustrated a species of folding mechanism which is not in itself made the subject of the present application, and therefore need not be described in great detail. it comprises a series of infoldcrs Which are suitably grouped or spaced around the mid-- die of the bed on the machine, according to the form of the blanks to be infolded. These infolders are designated by ihc reference leiters C C G which are'iitted and connected with actuating mechanism so as to operate in the,order named. i l-convenient form of infolder actuating mechanism is ihat, shown in my prior patent No. 708.030, and generally speaking may be described as consisting in an oscillating ring D having a handle I) by which the operator may effect oscillations thereof; the said ring being fitted to an annular slide-way formed in'the bed of the machine. Cams l E E constitute the operative connections between said oscillating ring D and the ini'oldcrs G C 7 and as will be seen each of said cams is provided with eccentric andconc'cntric portions, which are timed to operate in sequence, the ecccn trio portion of cam E first coming into op oration, succeeded by that of cam E, and
lastly by that of cam E The above dosr ibed mioldmg mechanism 1S merely one convenient means for producing movements inward and outward relatively between the infolders and the blanks, which are to be folded upon the su port.
The die or temp et contemplated in the present invention may be any wellknown form of templet, but for convenience is illustrated as being a templet of the species heretofore termed an expanding and contracting templet; that is, one which is provided with inwardly and outwardly moving parts having edge portions constructed and fitted to contact directly with the blanks upon the bed or support in order to define the folds thereof. This species of templet is most desirable for carrying out the manufacture of cufi's such as that which the machine illustrated herein is adapted to infold, and for all forms of blanks in which all the sides are to be folded in one operation. 1
In Fi 1 herein it will be seen that the said templet or fold-defining member comprises abody or stock portion F, at the bottom of which are secured plates f. The purpose of these plates is to rest upon the blanks to be infolded for the purpose of defining or outlining the shape of the folds; and they are, therefore, made comparatively thin or even sharp so that when the extended edges of the blanks are inturned or infolded .over
the edge of the templet plates a substantially accurate fold will be formed. For effecting an inward and outward movement of the templet plates f, I have provided diagonally arranged slide-ways in the templet body portion orstock F. The templet plates are connected to slides which are adapted to move backward and forward in these diagonal slide-ways; and for convenience, all of the same diagonally moving slldes are operated through link connections, the ends of the links being connected to the respective slides and to a central member which may conveniently be actuated through. an 'oscillating handle G. This handle .G should extend forwardly and may conveniently be employed by the operator for effecting the hereinafter described upward and downward movements of the templet as well as the expanding and contracting operations just described. A convenient way to fit the said templet to be positioned upon and removed from the blanks is shown hereinin a templet supporting arm H, which extends rear wardly to pivotal parts it h, and is extended still further rearwardly to the counterbalance weight H. For reasons which will hereinafter appear, the arm H is made to diverge toward the pivotal points thereof.
- I willnow describe a novel pressure ap- 1 in mechanism whose )ur ose is to eflect' or bring about asuitably powerful creasing pressure upon the folds of the blanks, while the folds remain undisturbed upon the bed or support, but subsequently to the-relative .outward movement of the infolders; and
also preferably subsequently to the withdrawal of the fold=defining edges of the templet, by contraction or otherwise, from the interior of the folds.
It is particularly important herein that the pressure applying mechanism should take effect after the infolders are moved to their outward position, and while the same are disengaged from the folds of the blank. Itwill be clear that such operation relieves the infolders from the necessity of .taking part in the final pressing operation upon the folds of the blank, and other advantages might be pointed out. By relieving the illfolders from taking part in the pressing, said infolders are enabled to be constructed, in. their thin edge portions, of such thinness of metal and of such width of the thin portions, as to render them of maximum efficiency in the folding inwards of the blank edges.
The pressure applying mechanism contemplated by.my invention consists of a part such as a treadle, through which an operator may apply his muscular efforts to be trans mitted to the fold of the blank, or, some equivalent part to take the place of a treadle when the machine is actuated by power. Intermediate connections are provided between the said pressure applying. treadle and some member of the machine which is capable ofv being positioned upon' the folded blanks after the infolders have folded blanks, but it is obviously only nec'essarythat the presser shall be of such form that it willcontact with the folds in the blanks, and therefore the central portion might be omitted. As is well known, blanks vary in outline, and blanks of given out-" line vary in size, and therefore the blank contacting surfaces of the presser should be easily replaceable by one of different size-or shape; or it may be otherwise adjustable in analogy to the adjustm ents for size of templet-s, as explained in prior patents, e. 9., No. 666,766, of January 29, 1901.
-J indicates my preferred form of presser. It consists in a horizontally arranged plate or block which is substantially the size and co-extensive with the infolded blanks. The
presser J is normally in an inoperative pbsi tign, which may for convenience be at the rear of the middle portion of the bed of the machine. This position is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. vI have illustrated a mechanism for carrying the presser J from its inop:
se saw erative position into a position directly above the infolded blanks. The mechanism so illustrated comprises a presser carrying arm K, to which the presser J is secured in anylsuitable manner, and the arm K extends rearwardly to a sliding pivot consisting of a'roller L turning about a pin fixed in the frame of the machine, and longitudinal slots formed in the rearward extensions K of the presser carrying arm K. The purpose of the sliding pivot will be clearly understood to be to permit the presser J to be shifted from its normal position, shown in Figs-1 and 2, to its operative position, shown in Fig. 3. An adjusting screw Z may for con-: venience be employed in each of the longitudinal slots of the extensions K for insuring accuracy.
I have stated that a treadle is employed in the present instance for bringing about the application of pressure to the folds of the blank. I have shown what may be termed a double treadle. This consists in substantially two treadles. The upper treadle M is directly above the lower treadlc N, so that when the former is depressed by the foot of the operator, or in other manner, it will eventually contact and engage with the said treadlc N, so that the continued movement will carry both treadles downward.
The treadle M is shown. connected by means of a flexible member such as a cord, rope or chain M}, with an extension in of the presser carrying arm K, in such manner that a depression of the treadle M will cause a tension in the flexible member M, which will serve to move forwardly the presser carrying arm K. A spring we is interposed in such flexible connection M, in order to prevent breakage when the same has reached its limit of movement as defined by the movement of the presser carrying arm K.
The arm K is fitted with means to effect an upward and then a downward movement therein sin'niltaneously with its forward movement effected through the treadle N. Such means may conveniently comprise a cam consisting of a cam roller P, provided on the presser carrying arm K and a fixed cam 7), having an upwardly inclined surface to eti'ectlhe elevation of the press-er carrying arm K during the first part of the forward movement, and a'down 'ardly inclincd surface for permittinga downward movement of the presser carrying arm and presscr J at the forward 'cnd of the movement thereof. At the conclusion of the forward movement of the presser, it will as herein arranged rest upon the middle part of the bed of the machine or upon the blanks thereon, as shown in Fig.
I have shown a hook engagement as a convenient means of temporarily connecting the treadle i with the member of the machine that is to be depressed upon the folds of the blanks to crease thesame'. I have, however, shown a preferable arrangement of providing said hook engagement intermediate of the treadle N and the arm K, carrying the prcsscr J. Such hook engagement may be effected in a convenient manner as follows: The book in at the lower end of the downward projection I: of the arm K will be carried from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3, when the presser J is moved from its normal or iuope 'ative position to its forward or operative position.
The co-acting hook n. on the upper end of the arnrn is fitted for upward and downward movements, which are eil'ected by link N and lover N intermediate the arm n and the treadle N. A cam surface is provided at Q on the arm n, and this is intended to engage with a roller which turns about a fixed pivot at g, the efi'ect of this arrangement being that the arm n is thrown rearwardly, causing the book a to engage the book It in the manner shown in Fig. 3,.and immediately after the downward movement of the treadle N is begun. The continued down 'ard movement of the treadle N to the extreme position shown in Fig. 3 will through the engagement of hooks a la cllect a powerful depression or lowering of the presser J, which rests upon the folds of the blanks. The ratio of the leverages intermediate of the treadle N and the presscr .l is such as to ca us a. greatly multiplied pressure to be applied to the folds of the blanks. The treadle may be considered a presseractuating member operated by foot, though obviously foot power need not always be used.
The support which holds the blanks and relatively to which the blanks are not moved during tie operations upon it, should be stationary; at least, its location relatively to the general location of the infolders or to the framework of the machine should be substantially constant. in charm-twining the support, however, in the claims as (:on
thesupport which holds the blanks is expressed in the claims as in a constant position rclativcl Y to the 'eneral )osition of the 4 infolders, is it intended to exclude a joint mov'ement together of the support and the infolders, as, for example, a bodily move ment of the machine as a whole, it that. should be desired; so long as the blank retains the same position relatively to the outward position of the iul'oldcrs and to the support beneath it throughout the operations of the tcmplet. the ini'olders and the presser.
An important feature of the described machine is that the infolders, which may have wide thin inner edges because not subject to the destructive repeated pressing actions, move outwardly beyond the blank edges, and as so moved outwards, inclose a space which corresponds with the presser. The presser may pass entirely within said space because the infolders both at their thin, portions and their stock portions are out of the way of the presser. And the presser, because of having a proper form, not an indefinite fiat member, but with edges that can clear the folders, passes within the latter after they are moved outwards and comes down upon the folds, squeezing them against the support beneath. This action, moreover,
is such that can take place immediately afterthe infolders leave the folds, so that the folds are only instantaneously, or not at all, left to themselves.

The presser mechanism is such as to carry this action out. An important advantage lies in overcoming the tendency of a fold;to open outif left unprotected before bein fixed by creasing pressure.
l' hat I claim as my invention is:
1. 'A folding-machlne comprising a support whichholds the blanks during the infolding and pressing operations thereof, a
fold-defining member, mechanical means for accurately positioning said defining member blanks while the latter still remain in the same vplace occupied by them during the folding operation,'relatively to said support and-to the eneral location of the infolders.
2. A-foling machine comprising a bed or support upon which the blanks to be infolded ma be laid,, a fold-defining member,
mechanica -means for accurately positioning said defining member upon the blanks upon said support, infolding mechanism and means for producing a movement of said mechanism relative to the blank whereby an edge of the blank is folded upon an edge portion of the fold-defining member and whereby said mechanism is subsequent? removed from the folded edge of the b a This is by reason of- .the explained construction of the infolders means for withdrawin said fold-defining member from the folde edge of thelblank,

3. A folding machine comprising a rigid substantially stationary blank support, which bears the blanks during infolding, a contractible templet fitted to be accurately lowered upon the blank supportin surface of said support, a presser member, independent infolders, means for contracting said templet to withdraw it from the folds of -a blank operated upon, means for withdrawing said infolders from their engagement with such folds and subsequently operative means vfor 1 applying through said presser member a creasing pressure upon such-blank, both said withdrawing means and also said pressure lapplying means being operative while such ank remains in substantially its original position on said support.
l. .A folding machine comprising a substantially stationary blank su port, a folddefining member fitted to bel the blank supporting surface ofsaid support, infolding mechanism and means for producing a movement thereof relative to the blank whereb an edge of the blank is owered upon folded upon an e ge portlon of the fold-defining member and whereby said mechanism 'is subsequently removed from the folded edge of the blank, means for withdrawing said fold-defining member from the folded edge of the blank, a laterally movable presser,
and means operative subsequently to the withdrawal of said infolder'and of said folddefining member for forcing said presser upon the blank while it remains in substantially its original position on said support.
5. A foldin machine comprising a sub.- stantially stationary blank support, a contractible templet fitted to be accurately 'low-v eredupon the portion of said sup ort on which the blanks bear durin .in olding,
independent infolders, means for conti acting said templet to withdraw it from the folds of a blank operated upon, means for withdrawing said infolders from their.en
gagement with such folds, a presser, and means operative subsequently to said withdrawing means for forcing said presser upon the blank while it remains in substantially its original position on said support.
6. A folding machine comprising a substantially stationary blanksupport, a contractible templet fitted to be accurately loweredupon the portion of said sup ort on which the blanks bear during infol ing, in-
scenic dependent infolders, means for withdrawing said lntolders from engagement with the folds of a blank operated upon, means for contracting said templet and for withdrawing it from such folds, a presser memher, and means for applying through said resser member a creasing pressure to such folds, all said means being operative in the order named and While such blank remains in substantially its original position upon said support.
7. A folding machine comprising a substantially stationary blank support, a' contractible, templet fitted to be accurately lowered upon the portion of said support on which the blanks bear during imtolding, independent infolders, a presser, means for Withdrawing said infolders from engage ment with the folds of a blank operated upon, means for contracting said templet and for Withdrawing it from such folds, and means for forcing said presser upon such blank, all said means being operative in the order named and while such blank remains in substantially its original position upon said support.
, 8. A foldin machine having in combination a fold-dc 'ning member, infolders, and apresser forpressing the folds of blanks,
said presser being normally in inoperative" position, a treadle, and operative connections betweensald, presser and treadle, whereby upon the, actuation ct said treadle, said presser will be moved laterally toward an operative position and then depressed upon the folds of the blanks.
l). A folding machine having in combination a fold-defining member, infolders, means for withdrawin said fold-defining member'and said infolt ers from their operative position, and a subsequently operative resser for pressing the folds of blanks, said ,presser being'normally in inoperative position, a treadlc, operative connections between said presser and trcadle, wlilreby upon the actuation of said treadle, said presser will be automatically brought toward an operative position and then depressed directly upon the folds of the blanks, and heating means for said support.
10. In a machine for folding cnfi' blanks or analogous articles. the combination with blank defining and folding instrun'ientalities, of a presser independent of the blank defining and fo ding instrunientality, said presser connected with the machine to move toward the'blanks on the support, and a powe applying device comprising connect-ions normally disengaged from said presser but automatically eugageablc therewith when operated, substantially as and for the purpose described.
1.1. In a machine for folding cutl' blanks or the like, the combination with folding mechanism and a templet, or a presser independent of the folding mechanism and temi plet, independent positioning arms for the i templet and prcsscr, both pivoted substanl tial distance toward the rear of the blank l position, and power multiplying mechanism I which is normally disengaged from the presser and is operable to become engaged with and to actuate said presser after the operations of and the withdrawal of the infolding-mechanism and tcmplet.
12. A folding machine comprising a blank support, fold-defining and fold-producing means disengagcable from a blank on said support by a movement in the plane of said blank, a presser, and means operative subsequently to such disengagement for moving said prcsser first laterally, then downwardly, upon such blank.
13. In a folding machine, a blank support, folding devices, a presser, and a treadlc operatively connected to said presser to move it first laterally over, then downwardlygupon said support.
14-. A folding machine comprising a blank support, a folddeiining member, a plurality of independent infolders, means for produc- Lions of the fold-defining member and the infolders subsequently withdrawn from their operative positions, means for withdrawing said fold-defining member from the folded edge of the blank, a presser member, and operative means for applying through said presser member a creasing pressure upon the folds of the blank subsequently to the with d'awal of said infolders and saidfolddefining member but before the blank is removed from the position occupied during the folding operation.
15. A folding macl' 'ne comprising a blank support, a fold-defining member comprising a plurality of cooperating fold-delining parts, a plurality of independent infolders, means for producing movements of said in folders whereby edges of the blank may be folded upon edge portions of the folddefining member and the infolders subsequently withdrawn, means for witlnlrawing said fold-defining member by contracting the parts thereof from the folded edges of the blank, a prcsscr member and operative means creasing pressure upon the folds of the blank subsequently to the withdrawal of said infolders and said fold-defining member but before the blank is removi-id from the position occupied during the folding operation.
l6. In a machine for folding culi' blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a blank support. substantially stationary relatively to the machine frame, a fold-defining member fitted with movable fold-defining parts whereby it may be contracted and expanded, the fold defining edges thereof ing movements of said infolders whereby edges of the blank are tolded upon edge porfor applying through said presser member a adapted to bear directly upon' the blanks upon said support, independent infolders, means for producing inward and outward movements of said infolders whereby edge portions of blanks may be folded over edge portions of the said fold-defining member and the infolders subsequently withdrawn from such folds, a presser member, and operfrom the position occupied during the folding operation.
17. In a machine for'folding cuff blanks or analogous articles, the combination of a blank support substantially stationary relatively to the machine franfe, a fold-defining member fitted with movable fold defining parts whereby it may be contracted and expanded, the fold defining edges thereof adapted to bear directly upon the blanks upon said support, a positioning arm for said fold-defining member, independent infolders, means for producing inward and Outward movements of said infolders whereby edge portions of blanks may be folded over edge portions of the said fold-defining member and the infolders subsequently Withdrawn fromsuch folds, a presser member and operative means for producing through said presser member a creasing pressure upon the folds of the blanks, comprising a part movable toward and from the blanks and a positioning arm and connections therefor whereby the creasing pressure may be applied subsequently to the contraction of the fold-defining member, and. subsequently to the withdrawal of said infolders but before the blanks are removed from the position occupied during the folding operation.
18. A folding machine comprising in combination a blank support, a templet for defining the folds of the blanks, on said support, infolders for folding edges of the blanks over edges of the templet, and the following pressing means adapted to come into play after templet and infolders have completed their functions, namely: a presseractuating member and a presser, the two normally unconnected, and mechanical parts adapted to automatically connect the two during pressing operation, whereby movement in-said presser-actuating member is communicated through the presser to the folds.
19. A folding machine having in combination a blank support, a fold defining member, infolders, a presser, and a pressure producing treadle or the like for producing inatically disconnected after the pressing movements of said presser, the said treadle and presser being normally disengaged, and intermediate mechanical connections whereby when the treadle is operated -pressing movements of said presser, the sai treadle and presser being normally disengaged, and lntermediate mechanlcal connections whereby when the treadle is oper ated it becomes automatically connected with said presser, whereby the pressure upon the treadle is communicated through the I presser to the folds, of the blanks and autopressing operation is completed;
21.
