Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY F. HONISOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Clair, county of Blue Earth, and State of Minnesota, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Jars and Covers Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in jar and covers therefor, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective construction by which a jar may be absolutely sealed, and the greater the internal pressure created by gases or otherwise, the tighter will be the seal, yet permitting the cover to be readily removed without the liability of breaking the cover or the jar.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a longitudinal section of the upper portion of a jar made in accordance with my improvement showingthe cover secured in place. Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, and, Fig. 3, a side elevation of the locking pm.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the jar, the mouth B, of which is elongated or elliptical in shape, and C the cover or closure, which is also elliptical in shape, of slightly larger dimensions than the opening or mouth of the ar, and this cover has a portion cut away from its upper edge as indicated by D, so that a portion thereof, will fit snugly within the opening B. Projecting from the upper surface of said cover are the lugs E, to which is secured the locking pin F by means of the bolt G, and the nut H, a hole I being formed in the lower end of this locking pin, through which the bolt G is adapted to pass. Above this hole I is formed another similar hole J, through which the holding pin K is adapted to pass, for holding the cover O in position until it is secured in place, as it will be hereinafter described. The upper end of the locking pin F has a thread L cut therein, on to which is threaded the wheel M.
N indicates a spider, the legs of which rest upon the top of the jar, having the projections N extending a short distance into the opening or mouth B, so as to prevent the spider from slipping or moving out of place. The hole O is formed through the center of the upper portion of the spider, through which passes the locking pin F.
In practice when a cover is to be secured upon the jar, its shortest diameter is turned to coincide with the longest diameter of the opening or mouth of the jar, thus permittingit to be passed through the mouth into the interior, when it is again turned, so that its longest diameter coincides with the corresponding diameter of the mouth, when by turning it upward its edges will be brought against the under side of the top of the The holding pin K is then passed through the opening J and rests upon the top of the jar to hold the cover in place. The spider N is then placed over the locking pin F and the wheel M threaded upon the locking pin, so as to draw the cover firmly against the shoulders and if found necessary, a rubber or other washer ring P may be placed upon the cover, so as to bear against the under side of the top of the jar, and thus hermetically seal the jar.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown as these may be varied within certain limits without departing from the spirit of my invention.
By the use of my improvement, a jar may be closed and hermetically sealed, and as the cover is on the inside of the jar, any pressure generating within the same will tend to force the cover more firmly against its side, thus doing away with any possibility of leakage, and yet when it is desired to open the jar, this may be readily accomplished by taking 01f the wheel and forcing the cover inwardly, then by turning it at right angles to its closed position, it may be withdrawn through the mouth of the ar.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and useful is 1. A jar having an elliptical or elongated shaped mouth, a similar shaped cover adapted to pass within the mouth and be drawn upward against the inner surface of the top of the ar, lugs, formed with the upper portion of the cover, a locking pin having openings formed in the lower end thereofand threaded on its upper end, a' bolt for securing said locking pin to the lugs, a nut threaded on said bolt for holding it in place, a spider adapted to pass from the locking pin over upon the upper edges of the mouth, a Wheel threaded upon the locking pin so as to clamp the cover and spider in place, and a holding pin adaptedto pass throughthe upper opening formed in the locking pin for holding the cover in position until. the Wheel may be threaded upon the locking pin, as shown and described.
2. In combination With a jar having an elliptical or elongated shaped-mouth, an elliptical or elongated cover having a portion cut aWay from its upper edge, lugs formed on the upper surface of said cover, a threaded locking pin, means for securing said looking pin to the lugs a spider adapted to pass from said locking pin, the legs of said spider having projections formed thereon, extendinga short distance into the opening or mouth of the ar, so as to prevent said spider from slipping, a Wheel threaded upon the locking pin, and means for holding the cover in position until said heel may be threaded on said locking pin, substantially, as and for the purpose set forth.
