' PAPER CLIP.
APPLIOATION FILED JAN.10, 190a.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 10, 1908. Serial No. 410,150.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. CLIFF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Paper Clips, of
which the following 15 a specification.
My invention relates to paper clips and it 1 toward each other or inwardly as indicatedhas for its object to provide a clip having means to prevent the engagement ofsheets of paper or similar objects held in a clip with a second or other clip holding sheets of paper or similar objects, when such papers or similar objects are filed in proximity to each other.
An objection heretofore found in connection with the use of clips of the character of my invention, is that a clip holding one set of papers together will engage or catch the papers or similar objects held by another clip in proximity thereto, thus rendering it diflicult to separate the papers and remove the same from a file case.
A convenient embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, but it will be understood that various changes in the details of construction may be made within the-scope of the claims without departing from my invention.
In the drawin'gss-Figure 1 'is a perspective view of a clip embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section of the same showing a number of papers or similar objects held. between the opposite sides of the clip.
' Referring to the drawings :-1 and 2 designate the sides of the clip consisting of a strip of suitable material preferably metal Th'e'strip is bent intermediate its ends as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 ready to have the sheets of paper 3 or similar objects inserted between the sides land 2, in position to be pierced by the points or prongs t and 5 struck up fromlthe sidesxl and 2. These .points or prongsfi and "upon H 5 are so. positioned the sides 1 and 2 that when the sides arepressed together as lndicated in F ig. 3, they overlap and occupy posi ions side by side, the point 5 being in front of the point 4.-
In order to prevent the ends of the sides j by one of the clips,
1 and catch or engage the edges of papers or 0 objects, which may be held by other clips when such papers are filed away together and it is desired to I have bent the portions 6 and 7 at the ends of the sides 1 and 2 such removal, the clip st-ructed with the side edges ofthc opposite liability of the as indicated in Fig.
inthe drawings most clearly in Fig. 3.
When the ends of the sides 1 and 2 are bent toward each other, the edges of the inward-1y bent ends rest against or very close to the papers or similar objects which may be held between the sides 1 and 2 of the clip; and such inwardly bent portions 6 and 7 beinginclined as shown, it is sides 1 and 2 in substantially the same plane as the main or body portions of such sides so that when the clip or..fastener is in use, 3 of the drawings, a space is formed between the opposite. sides of the sheets 3 and the respective sides 1 and 2 of the clip ,or fastener. Inthe construction shown these spaces are triangular in outline, but it will be understood that their contour may be varied somewhat without departing from my invention. When the spaces are provided between the opposite sides of the clip or fastener and the sheets held thereby, anyone desiring to separate the sides of the fastener to remove such sheets may readily eatch hold of the said 2 of the clip from projecting so as toremove the papers held Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
obvious that the v ends of the clipsto catch or sides with the fingers to efiect the separation desired.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim A. clip or fastener -consistihgof a strip of suitable material bent at a point intermediate its ends and having means upon oplposite sides of the said clip or fastener ich are adapted to hold sheets'of-paper or slmiioo side edges'thereof being in substantially the same plane as the main body portions of the said sldes, whereby spaces are provided between the sides and the said sheets so that the sides of the clip or fastener me, be readlly separated to remove the sand sleets therefrom.
eee,me
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I hereunto. Sign my name this 3rd day of January, A. D. 1908.
GEO. H. CLIFF. In the presence o':f-
' S Hence MYERS,
LAURA KLEINFELDER.
